Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has rewarded 157 staff members with a total of N11.85 million for their dedication, professionalism, and outstanding service delivery. The event was the second edition of the institution's yearly Distinguished Service Lecture and Awards, designed to recognize staff contributions, promote institutional values, and foster discussions on public service excellence.
Top Awards and Recipients
Two staff members—one from the teaching category and one from the non-teaching category—were selected as the best overall staff and received N1 million each. Ten additional staff members were recognized in their respective schools and units, each receiving N250,000. Furthermore, 147 staff members from academic departments and service units were awarded N50,000 each.
Rector's Remarks
The Rector, Dr Ibraheem Abdul, stated that the financial reward aimed to appreciate committed staff and motivate the workforce to achieve more. He emphasized the importance of recognizing hard work to foster a culture of excellence within the institution.
Lifetime Achievement Awards
Beyond staff recognition, the ceremony also featured Lifetime Achievement Awards presented to three Nigerians for their enduring contributions to education, governance, leadership, and national development. The recipients were:
- Tajudeen Olusi, Chairman of the Lagos State Governance Advisory Council (GAC)
- Mr Majekodunmi Okufi, pioneer Rector of the college
- Justice Ishola Olorunnimbe, retired Chief Judge of Lagos State
Dr Abdul noted that the award recognized their exemplary leadership, which has left indelible footprints in their respective spheres of influence. “By celebrating these distinguished personalities, we are not only recognizing their remarkable efforts but also setting a high standard for others to emulate,” he said. He added that the award reinforces the institution’s belief that true leadership is measured by service, vision, and the positive transformation of society.

In separate remarks, the awardees urged the institution to sustain the tradition to encourage greater devotion to service. They highlighted the importance of such recognition in motivating individuals to contribute more effectively to national development.
Governing Council Chairman's Address
The Governing Council chairman, Prof. Funso Afolabi, represented by a council member, Ebenezer Akinbolade, stressed the need for reforms in institutions due to rapid socio-economic transformation and rising public expectations. He emphasized the importance of sustaining a culture of excellence within the public service.
