YBC-2003 Medicus Foundation Awards Scholarships to CMUL Students for Academic Excellence
Three students from the College of Medicine, University of Lagos (CMUL) have been honored with scholarship awards from the YBC-2003 Medicus Foundation. This initiative is spearheaded by the institution's alumni class of 2003, aiming to foster academic excellence and give back to their alma mater. The awards ceremony took place in the college's boardroom, where faculty members and students gathered to celebrate the recognition of these outstanding scholars.
Provost Commends Alumni for Sustained Support
During the event, the Provost of CMUL, Professor Ademola Oremosu, praised the alumni group for maintaining their support for over two decades since graduation. He emphasized that this initiative demonstrates a profound commitment to advancing medical education. Professor Oremosu urged the beneficiaries to fully utilize the opportunity, particularly highlighting the mentorship component integrated into the award.
Foundation Coordinator Highlights Rigorous Selection Process
Dr. Victor Fakeye, the coordinator of the foundation, explained that the initiative was established from a desire to meaningfully contribute to the institution that provided them with a solid academic foundation. He noted that CMUL's education quality remains globally competitive. Dr. Fakeye detailed that the beneficiaries were chosen through a rigorous screening process, which evaluated not only academic performance but also character and leadership potential. He encouraged the awardees to strive for excellence and uphold the values expected of future medical professionals.
2025 Award Recipients and Impact on Healthcare
The 2025 award recipients include David Chukwuemeka Masha from Dentistry, Abe Temitayo Deborah from Medicine and Surgery, and Eledu Emmanuella, also from Medicine and Surgery. Since its inception, the foundation has supported a total of 15 students. One of its early beneficiaries, John Nwokocha, described the scholarship as highly impactful, noting that it eased his academic journey and inspired him to maintain high standards. He added that such interventions positively contribute to Nigeria's healthcare system by empowering dedicated and capable students.
Foundation Reaffirms Commitment to Collaboration
Dr. Fakeye expressed appreciation to the college management for their continued collaboration and reaffirmed the foundation's commitment to sustaining this initiative. Other dignitaries present at the event included the Deputy Provost, Professor Daniel Odebiyi, and the Acting Director of Finance, Mrs. Mary Oyefusi, among others.
