In a major push to tackle unemployment and boost skills acquisition, the Federal Government of Nigeria has commenced the nationwide rollout of its Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Initiative. The programme has successfully disbursed its first tranche of direct financial support to beneficiaries across the country.
First Tranche Payments Reach Over 42,000 Beneficiaries
The initiative, spearheaded by the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, has seen over 42,000 young Nigerians receive a direct monthly stipend of N22,500. This financial support is designed to cover basic needs and transportation costs, enabling recipients to focus fully on their vocational training without financial strain.
Concurrently, the government has provided funding to more than 600 independent technical and vocational centres nationwide. This funding is crucial for enhancing training facilities, acquiring modern tools, and ensuring the centres can deliver high-quality, practical education.
A Swift Transition from Registration to Practical Training
Launched in May 2025, the TVET Initiative has been marked by its rapid implementation. The programme moved swiftly from the initial registration phase to the hands-on vocational training stage, reflecting a results-driven approach championed by the ministry.
Dr Alausa emphasised that the programme's core principles are efficiency and measurable impact. He stated that the government has ensured funds are delivered directly to both students and training centres promptly, eliminating bureaucratic delays that often hinder such schemes.
"The TVET payments are a direct fulfilment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to invest aggressively in our youth," Dr Alausa said. He added that the initiative is a core pillar of the administration's Renewed Hope Agenda, demonstrating how focused, practical support can actively transform lives and livelihoods.
