A 25-year-old equestrian from Massachusetts has tragically died after her show horse refused a jump, throwing her from the saddle and collapsing on top of her. Chloe Christina Smith, of Swampscott, was riding with friends on the evening of June 5 when the fatal incident occurred.
Details of the Accident
According to reports, Smith was thrown from her horse when it balked at a jump. The horse then fell onto her, causing critical injuries. The animal also sustained a fatal neck injury and died at the scene. Smith was airlifted to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester but succumbed to her injuries hours later, surrounded by family.
A Life Dedicated to Horses
Smith had recently fulfilled her dream of purchasing a working horse farm in Berlin, where she boarded 18 horses and other animals and trained riders. She had just moved into the farmhouse weeks before the accident. Her father, Jim, stated, "Her world was right there. Her life was horses. That was her love."
Her obituary described her death as a "cruel twist of fate," adding, "Chloe died living her dreams. Most of us never get that chance, that special moment where life comes together, the wind is at your back, and you have everything you ever wanted right in front of you."

Smith was not only an avid rider but also a progressive activist committed to social justice and equality. Her family shared that she hoped to turn her farm into a local destination for family celebrations and community events. Her mother, Abbe, recalled how her daughter's love for horses began after summers at equestrian camps as a child. "She said she wanted to live there the rest of her life," Abbe said. "She wanted to get married there."
Her older brother, Andrew, noted how thrilled she was to open her own bar just seven weeks prior, emphasizing her passion for her horses and her new ventures.
