Mr. Gerald Okeke, Executive Director of Creative & Design at Infuxion Communications Limited, recently shared insights with GREGORY AUSTIN NWAKUOR on his professional journey, the role of AI, and the state of Nigeria's creative industry.
Early Interest in Creative Design
Okeke's passion for creative design began during his secondary school days, where Fine Arts, including graphic design and imaginative composition, sparked his interest. He later studied Graphic Design at the Institute of Management & Technology (IMT) Enugu.
Realizing a Career Path
It wasn't until his second year in college that Okeke realized the full potential of a career in design. A course in Advertising Design during his OND at Anambra Poly solidified his path, as he had always admired adverts and signage but never knew the professionals behind them.
Defining Moments and Influences
Key turning points included his first job as a visualizer at Adtech Limited, his elevation to head the Creative department at C&F, and joining Infuxion Communications in 2023. Influences on his creative philosophy include lecturers Mr. Bok Okafor and Mr. Ephraim Ogu, as well as late Mr. Mike Obiajulu Meze.
Nigeria's Opportunities and Challenges
Nigeria, as Africa's most populous nation and fastest-growing creative hub, offers rich cultural inspiration and a youthful population. However, challenges like limited access to finance and inadequate infrastructure persist. The Creative Economy Development Fund (CEDF) has yet to make a significant impact.
Overcoming Challenges
Okeke faced the shift from analog to digital design, which required extensive training and practice to master computer-based tools. He overcame this through persistent learning and practice.
Creative Leadership and Process
Okeke practices an open-door leadership style, believing creativity can come from anyone. His branding process involves understanding the brief, discovery and audit, strategy and positioning, concept and ideation, and design and execution.
Balancing Creativity and Commercial Objectives
Okeke emphasizes that creativity must serve client objectives and solve problems, not just be aesthetically pleasing. It should be strategic to meet commercial goals.
Milestone Project
A career highlight was the visual identity project for the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), which involved creating a comprehensive visual identity manual for the sovereign fund.
AI and the Evolving Role of Creative Director
In the AI era, Creative Directors must guard brand integrity and supervise new roles like Prompt Engineers and Story Model Trainers, ensuring AI-generated content aligns with brand empathy.
Current State and Trends
The Nigerian creative industry has grown significantly, with freelancers gaining global recognition. Trends include heritage branding, Afrocentric visual storytelling, and AI collaboration. However, local production infrastructure still lags.
Advice for Young Creatives
Okeke advises young creatives to be open to learning, practice continuously, and embrace new tools and techniques.
Infuxion Communications' Vision
Infuxion's creative vision is to produce strategically sound campaigns that meet client objectives, not just aesthetic works. Okeke has brought order to the creative process, and the company is increasingly adopting AI.
Measuring Success and Legacy
Success is measured by how well a campaign meets client objectives. Okeke aims to build a legacy of professionalism, integrity, and client-centric consultancy at Infuxion.
Future Outlook
Okeke sees the Nigerian creative industry heading toward a 'creative paradise' with AI, improved tools, and local production capabilities in the next 5–10 years. His personal goal is to build Infuxion into a top strategy-led marketing consultancy in Nigeria and West Africa.
