Laju Iren Premieres 'Onobiren: A Woman's Story' to Celebrate South-South Culture and Women's Resilience

Filmmaker and author Laju Iren recently hosted the premiere of her latest project, Onobiren: A Woman's Story, in Lagos, transforming the event into a vibrant celebration of South-South Nigerian culture. The premiere, themed "South-South Royalty," showcased the rich heritage of the Niger Delta region, particularly Warri, through a dazzling display of traditions and cinematic artistry.

Inspiring Women's Narratives Through Personal Connection

As the executive producer and writer, Iren shared her deep personal inspiration for the film. "As an Itsekiri girl, this project addresses the underrepresentation of women in storytelling," she explained. "We often see women in stories, but they tend to be repetitive. Coming from a minority tribe, I felt compelled to create something unique that highlights our perspectives." She emphasized the importance of diversity in Nigerian narratives, noting that filming in her grandmother's village, Koko, allowed her to authentically represent the South-South region. "Bringing different cultures together enriches storytelling and reinforces our unity as one Nigeria," Iren added.

Challenging Gender Norms and Drawing from Life

The film delves into the multifaceted lives of women, challenging traditional gender roles. Iren revealed that her own mother, who was a teacher, tailor, and business-owner, served as a key inspiration. "My parents led by example in appreciating women, and I drew from various aspects of life, including stories of women I've never met," she said. She hopes Onobiren will elevate women's stories, spark conversations about resilience, and highlight how hard work can transcend one's background. "Faith is always an element in my work, whether pronounced or subtle, and as a storyteller, I aim to inspire through versatility," Iren noted.

Cast Insights and Cinematic Impact

Featuring a stellar cast including Ruby Akubueze, Bisola Aiyeola, Deyemi Okanlawon, Patience Ozokwor, Norbert Young, and Desmond Bryce, the film has begun nationwide cinema screenings. Ruby Akubueze, who plays the determined character Roli, shared her enthusiasm: "Roli is a woman who overcomes life's difficulties to pursue her dreams. 'Onobiren' will inspire more filmmakers, especially women, to tell women's stories." Desmond Bryce was drawn to the project's uniqueness, stating, "The script stood out with its visual elements involving water and fish, portraying a young woman's resilience against struggles."

Distribution and Future Prospects

Iren, who has previously distributed work on platforms like Amazon Prime, YouTube, and airlines, discussed the strategic distribution of Onobiren. "We carefully consider the best mode to reach the right audiences, and this film is poised to make a significant impact," she said. Reflecting on her journey, she expressed optimism about the future of Nigerian cinema, emphasizing that storytelling can only improve as diverse voices are amplified.
