Nigerian Copyright Commission and MultiChoice Forge Strategic Alliance to Elevate Creative Sector
The Director-General of the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), Dr. John Asein, has emphasized the urgent need for enhanced collaboration with MultiChoice Nigeria to cultivate a more supportive environment for creators and investors within the nation's vibrant creative industry. This call was made during a significant courtesy visit by MultiChoice Nigeria's Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Kemi Omotosho, and her delegation to the NCC headquarters located in Abuja, marking a pivotal moment for industry stakeholders.
Dr. Asein expressed strong confidence in Mrs. Omotosho's leadership capabilities, professional expertise, and strategic vision, which are seen as crucial drivers for growth in Nigeria's rapidly evolving media and content ecosystem. He highlighted that this visit served as a vital platform to deepen collaborative efforts on issues essential for the sustainability and expansion of Nigeria's creative economy, underscoring the importance of such partnerships in fostering innovation and economic development.
MultiChoice's Contributions and the Path Forward
Acknowledging MultiChoice's longstanding and substantial contributions to the audiovisual and broadcast sectors, Dr. Asein pointed to their investments in infrastructure, support for local content production, and platforms that connect Nigerian creativity to global audiences. These efforts have significantly strengthened the creative value chain and enhanced both local and international visibility for Nigerian works, positioning the country as a key player in the global creative landscape.
Dr. Asein welcomed MultiChoice's "Back to Profitable Growth Plan," noting its potential to improve operational efficiency, enhance customer experience, and reinforce compliance with copyright standards. He emphasized that a balanced copyright ecosystem—one that protects creators' rights, secures investments for distributors, and promotes lawful access for users—is absolutely crucial for sustainable growth, particularly in today's digital and interconnected environment where challenges are increasingly complex.
Addressing Challenges and Strengthening Frameworks
However, Dr. Asein expressed concern over inconsistent judicial interpretations regarding the use of subscription broadcast services in commercial settings, such as hotels, and stressed the urgent need for clearer licensing terms and regulatory guidance to ensure market stability and fairness. He also highlighted the importance of strengthening licensing frameworks, delineating rights and responsibilities between broadcasters and collective management organizations, and ensuring that creators receive fair and timely remuneration for their intellectual property.
On the enforcement front, Dr. Asein drew attention to the growing threats posed by cable and digital piracy, including illegal IPTV services, unauthorized streaming, and signal redistribution. While the NCC is intensifying intelligence-led enforcement measures, he stressed that collaboration with industry operators like MultiChoice is essential for deploying advanced technologies, sharing critical intelligence, and coordinating anti-piracy efforts effectively across various platforms and regions.
Collaborative Efforts and Future Priorities
Dr. Asein underscored that enforcement alone is insufficient; continuous training for the judiciary, regulators, and enforcement agencies, alongside sustained public enlightenment campaigns, is essential to foster a culture of respect for intellectual property. He noted that MultiChoice is a key partner in promoting copyright awareness through its platforms, including participation in national and global advocacy initiatives such as World Intellectual Property Day and World Book and Copyright Day, which help educate the public on the value of creative works.
Looking ahead, Dr. Asein emphasized a collaborative approach to addressing emerging challenges in broadcast and digital content. He identified priority areas for NCC–MultiChoice cooperation, including:
- Joint anti-piracy initiatives to combat illegal activities.
- Harmonized licensing frameworks to streamline processes.
- Regulatory guidance on contentious issues to resolve disputes.
- Capacity building programs for industry stakeholders.
- Public awareness campaigns to educate consumers.
- Structured industry-regulator dialogue platforms for ongoing communication.
A statement by NCC's Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Ijeoma Egbunike, quoted Dr. Asein describing MultiChoice as "not only a regulated entity but a strategic partner in shaping a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable copyright ecosystem that supports creativity, drives investment, and ensures lawful access to content." This partnership aims to create a robust framework that benefits all parties involved in the creative value chain.
MultiChoice's Commitment and Delegation Details
Mrs. Omotosho commended the NCC for its anti-piracy efforts, including the successful shutdown of over 126 infringing websites, and reaffirmed MultiChoice's unwavering commitment to protecting the creative value chain. She called for adapting to technological developments and strengthening strategic communication, regulatory frameworks, and capacity-building initiatives to keep pace with the evolving digital landscape and ensure long-term industry health.
The MultiChoice delegation also included Mr. Shumani Greveda, Director of Regulatory Affairs and Government Relations, and Mr. Gozie Onumonu, Manager of Regulatory Affairs and Government Relations, highlighting the importance of this collaborative effort across multiple levels of leadership and expertise within the organization.
