A new collaborative novel, The Great Game of Scruples, by Nigerian political satirist Oluwatayo Jide Shoneye and historian Nurdini Shabani Bakari, delivers a searing critique of the global financial order. The book traces the lineage of exploitation from the 1884 Berlin Conference to modern-day debt traps, exposing how colonial extraction has evolved into digital fiscal control.
The Janitor and the Machine
The story follows Mamadou Cissé, a senior financial analyst in Dakar who maintains 'The Algorithm,' a centuries-old software that converts human life into interest rates and locks developing countries into perpetual debt. When a glitch reveals an uncounted 'Variable,' Mamadou must choose between serving the system or joining the 'Parallel Pulse,' a network of rebels fighting to dismantle the financial labyrinth.
From Berlin to the Niger Delta
The novel begins with a satirical chapter, 'The Berlin Buffet,' where European powers carve up Africa under the guise of free trade. It then shifts to Lagos Colony in 1902, highlighting the absurdity of an inverted economy where colonies borrow to buy from colonizers. The narrative also explores the Niger Delta, where corporate and military interests suppress activists fighting oil pollution, framing brutality as 'securing the flow.'
The Iron Fist Behind Scruples
The title refers to the ethical masks worn by creditors—'transparency,' 'good governance,' and 'sustainability'—which serve to monitor debt repayment while laundering stolen wealth. The book pays homage to leaders like Lumumba, Sankara, and Gaddafi, who were killed for challenging the financial system. A leaked memo reveals that NATO's Libya intervention was driven by fear of a gold-backed African Dinar that would break Western monetary monopoly.
A Blueprint for Liberation
Rather than advocating for debt forgiveness or IMF negotiation, the novel proposes liberation through the 'Parallel Pulse'—the informal economy of market women and grassroots networks based on communal trust. In a 'Silent Exodus,' professionals return home to build peer-to-peer energy grids and local economies. When the Algorithm crashes, Western cities collapse while Africa endures, sustained by community bonds.
The Verdict
The Great Game of Scruples is an intellectual Molotov cocktail that functions as a political manifesto. It argues that defeating the rigged game requires refusing to play. The novel is available globally and was launched at the London Book Fair.
