Oluwo of Iwo's Remarks on Ooni of Ife Stir Controversy
The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale Akanbi, has once again sparked controversy with comments seemingly directed at the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi. During a recent event, the monarch made remarks that many interpreted as a mockery of the Ife king's appearance.
In a viral video, the Oluwo stated, "Since I was born into this world, I have never seen a king who powders his entire face unless he is sick or has measles." Although he did not name the Ooni directly, observers widely believe the comment targeted the Ooni's distinctive grooming style.
Oluwo Describes Himself as a Liberated Monarch
During the same conversation, Oba Akanbi described himself as a "highly liberated monarch", emphasizing that he does not believe in spiritual powers. He also criticized traditional practices, dismissing the role of native doctors and ancestral shrines.
The Oluwo questioned why anyone would trust a native doctor with their life, noting that they cannot perform modern medical procedures like surgery. He stated, "Religion is about your personal relationship with God. Traditionalists are tied to shrines and oracles, which I do not practice."
Reactions to Oluwo's Comments
The monarch's remarks have drawn mixed reactions online, with some supporting his stance while others accuse him of disrespecting Yoruba culture and heritage. Many Nigerians criticized him for dismissing traditional healers who have long been part of Yoruba identity.
The Oluwo also warned against comparing Yoruba traditions with those of the Chinese and Indians, claiming Nigeria is greater than China because the latter depends on Nigeria for mineral resources. He urged Yorubas to abandon idol worship, describing it as a curse holding the people back.
Previous Controversies
This is not the first time the Oluwo has made headlines for controversial remarks. Earlier, he dismissed reports of terrorist activity in Iwo, describing them as false and misleading. He affirmed that the security group in question works closely with the police to maintain peace.
The ongoing feud between the Oluwo and the Ooni continues to generate public interest, with many watching for further developments.
