In a widely circulated video from Brixton, South London, a squirrel was filmed perched on a fence while holding an automated smoking device between its paws. The rodent appeared to be chewing on the device, drawing attention from onlookers and sparking online debate. Separately, in October, a TikTok user posted footage of a squirrel in Philadelphia with what resembled an Elfbar electronic cigarette. These incidents have gone viral, raising concerns about animal behavior and public health.
Experts Explain the Attraction
Wildlife experts suggest that squirrels are likely not seeking nicotine but are instead drawn to the fruity aromas emitted by e-cigarettes. Craig Shuttleworth, a red squirrel expert at Bangor University in Wales, noted, "In the old days, you’d see lots of discarded cigarette butts, but I don’t remember squirrels running around with them. It would be reasonable to assume that a vape would be more attractive than a normal tobacco product that’s not fruity." This indicates a shift in litter patterns and animal interactions with human waste.
Potential Health Risks for Wildlife
Despite the seemingly harmless attraction, the consequences could be severe. Shuttleworth warned that squirrels might inadvertently consume microplastics by gnawing on vaping devices or ingest nicotine, which is not naturally encountered in their environment. "They don’t encounter nicotine in the wild, so like many chemicals, it’s something you don’t want them exposed to," he lamented. This exposure could lead to health issues, mirroring concerns about vaping in humans.
