Tinubu Touts Economic Recovery, Cultural Diplomacy in London

Tinubu Advocates for Economic Stability and Cultural Influence at London Gathering

President Bola Tinubu utilized a prominent cultural occasion in London on Thursday to advance Nigeria's economic narrative and bolster the nation's expanding global impact through cultural diplomacy. He asserted that ongoing reforms are guiding the country toward recovery and enduring stability.

Cultural Event as a Platform for International Engagement

Speaking at a reception organized by the British Government at Tate Modern during his state visit, Tinubu emphasized that Nigeria's rich artistic heritage and creative industry are vital assets for projecting the country's global image and strengthening international partnerships. The event, focused on an exhibition of Nigerian modern art, assembled policymakers, investors, diplomats, and members of the Nigerian diaspora, serving as a venue for both cultural interaction and economic communication.

Tinubu described the theme of Nigeria's Modernism as symbolic of a pivotal era in the nation's history, when a cohort of artists affirmed identity and reshaped narratives about Nigeria. He stated, "The theme of the exhibition, Nigeria's modernism, is more than just a title for an art show. It is a testament to revolution. It tells the story of a generation of Nigerian giants who, in the middle of the 20th century, refused to be despised but chose to define themselves."

He noted that the blend of traditional and contemporary artistic expressions mirrors the broader Nigerian story, characterized by resilience, reinvention, and lasting relevance on the world stage.

Economic Reforms and Positive Outlook

Transitioning to economic matters, the President reassured the international audience that Nigeria is emerging from a phase of uncertainty, with reforms starting to produce tangible outcomes. According to him, the nation is moving into a new period of stability and growth, propelled by policy adjustments and the resilience of its citizens.

He urged stakeholders not to be influenced by negative narratives, emphasizing that Nigeria's long-term prospects remain optimistic. Tinubu remarked, "Nigerians have consistently demonstrated the capacity to excel anywhere in the world. That same spirit is driving our recovery and will define our future."

UK-Nigeria Relations and Diaspora Contributions

In his comments, the United Kingdom's Deputy Prime Minister, David Lammy, highlighted the strength of UK-Nigeria relations, describing both countries as strategic partners connected by shared values and growing economic links. He revealed that bilateral trade between Nigeria and the UK has achieved £8.1 billion annually, while over half a million Nigerians continue to make substantial contributions to the UK's cultural and economic environment.

Lammy also underscored Nigeria's global cultural influence, observing that its impact extends across visual arts, film, and music, reinforcing the significance of cultural diplomacy as a bridge between the two nations.

The event, moderated by Abike Dabiri-Erewa, also drew attention to the increasing prominence of Nigerians in the diaspora, especially those holding key positions in various sectors in the United Kingdom.
