The late Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo's final movie, 'Sweet 16', is set for a nationwide cinema release across Nigeria on August 14, 2026. The official trailer was unveiled on Tuesday, June 30, offering fans a last chance to see the beloved actor on the big screen. This announcement comes amid intense public scrutiny and a family feud surrounding Ekubo's death and burial arrangements.
Final Performance in 'Sweet 16'
Ekubo, who died in May after battling stage four kidney cancer, was laid to rest in his hometown of Arochukwu, Abia State, in June. The movie 'Sweet 16' features an impressive cast including Uche Jombo, Mercy Aigbe, Kalu Ikeagwu, and singer Yemi Alade. According to the synopsis, the film follows a young city girl preparing for her glamorous 16th birthday, but her plans take an unexpected turn when she is sent to the village, leading to a life-changing journey.
Family Controversy Intensifies
The film's release coincides with a period of heightened family tension. Some members of Ekubo's extended family have publicly raised concerns about the circumstances of his death and aspects of his burial. Allegations have been made that key relatives were not fully informed about events leading to the burial. Amid this, Ekubo's biological mother broke her silence through her close friend, Emmanuella Ubah, who stated that Ekubo had been trying to reconnect with his real mother before his death. Ubah said, 'I will speak on this matter only this once, and I do so with the permission of Alex Ekubo's birth mother. I have known this woman personally for over 20 years, both in Europe and in America.'
Elder Sister's Emotional Tribute
Ekubo's elder sister, Chioma, also broke her silence days after the burial. A throwback video showed the siblings dancing together at a family function, as she poured out her heart. This followed allegations from a relative about troubling details surrounding his death. The release of 'Sweet 16' offers fans a final opportunity to celebrate Ekubo's talent, even as unresolved family issues continue to make headlines.
