Asake Faces Backlash for Alleged One-Way Driving in Lagos Maybach
Asake Criticised for Alleged Traffic Violation in Lagos

A storm of criticism has engulfed popular Afrobeats singer Ahmed Ololade, known globally as Asake, following the circulation of a video that allegedly shows him flouting traffic laws in Lagos.

Viral Video Sparks Outrage

The short clip, which surfaced on social media in the early hours of Wednesday, December 24, 2025, appears to show a luxury Maybach sedan, allegedly driven by the singer, moving against traffic on a one-way road. The incident was said to have occurred around 3 a.m., just hours before Asake's highly anticipated concert scheduled for the same day at the Eko Convention Centre in Lagos.

In the footage, voices of onlookers can be heard shouting as the distinctive vehicle passes through the restricted route. Some individuals seemed excited, calling out the singer's name upon apparently recognising his car, despite the late hour.

Netizens Question Double Standards

The backlash has been particularly sharp, with many Nigerians on social media questioning why a celebrity of his stature would allegedly ignore local traffic laws. The timing is especially sensitive as the singer had recently returned to Nigeria from California, United States, where he is currently based.

Social media reactions highlighted a perceived hypocrisy. One user, @lamardgoat, pointedly remarked: "Them no dea disrespect LA traffic but you can proudly post Lasgidi own." Another, @txlvni, commented: "He can't try this in his precious America btw." These sentiments reflect a broader frustration with public figures who are seen to disregard laws at home that they would strictly obey abroad.

This controversy contrasts sharply with the positive reception Asake received upon his return, which included a celebrated visit to his alma mater, Obafemi Awolowo University, and a courtesy call to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.

Context and Previous Incident

The singer has yet to issue a public statement addressing the viral video. This incident brings unwelcome attention as thousands of fans were preparing to attend his concert.

It also follows a previous tragic event linked to the artist. Legit.ng had earlier reported that a lady known as Lojare reportedly died during a stampede at Asake's sold-out concert in Nyayo Stadium, Kenya, over a recent weekend.

The combination of these events places the "Lonely at the Top" crooner under intense public scrutiny, raising questions about responsibility and the influence of celebrities on societal norms in Nigeria.
