Baba Ijesha Faces Backlash Over N350,000 Aso Ebi for Son's Naming Ceremony
Baba Ijesha Backlash Over N350,000 Aso Ebi for Son's Naming

Nollywood actor James Olanrewaju, widely known as Baba Ijesha, has ignited fresh public controversy after the Aso Ebi prices for his newborn son's naming ceremony were criticized as exorbitant on social media. The actor, who recently regained freedom from prison, and his wife, celebrity stylist Abiodun Tokunbo (Luminee), announced the event for 27 August, with guests required to pay N250,000 for the men's package and N350,000 for the women's package to participate in the traditional Aso Ebi.

Aso Ebi Tradition and Pricing Backlash

Aso Ebi is a cherished Yoruba tradition where family and friends wear matching fabric to signify unity and support for the host. However, the steep prices sparked widespread criticism online, with many Nigerians deeming them excessive given the country's economic hardships. The invitation flyer, initially shared by Luminee on social media but later deleted, went viral, drawing mixed reactions. Some defended the couple, arguing that Aso Ebi is optional and they have the right to celebrate their child as they wish.

Baba Ijesha and Luminee's Relationship

Baba Ijesha and Luminee publicly confirmed their relationship in June after announcing the birth of their first child together. Prior to this, Luminee was known as a single mother and fashion designer for top Yoruba actresses like Toyin Abraham. The couple has not clarified when their relationship began or if they are married. Their pregnancy announcement attracted both congratulations and criticism, partly because it came just five months after Baba Ijesha's release from prison.

Prison Scandal and Legal Troubles

Baba Ijesha became a controversial figure after his 2021 arrest for allegedly sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl under the care of comedian Princess Adekoya (Princess). Following a trial at an Ikeja Special Offences Court, he was acquitted on some counts but convicted for indecent treatment of a child and sexual assault under Lagos State laws. In July 2022, he received a three-year prison sentence and was released in November 2025 after completing his term. Before his legal issues, he was known as a comic Yoruba actor.
