Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido has firmly stated he will not apologize to Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo for sharing and mocking his WAEC result on social media. In a recent interview on News Central Television, Davido said he did nothing wrong by posting the result, insisting it was meant to inform the people of Edo about the quality of their leader.
Davido Stands by His Actions
When asked if he would apologize to the governor, Davido gave a blunt response: "I am not going to apologise. I didn't do anything wrong. I was just showing people in the state the result that their governor has." His remarks come amid a heated political feud that has captured national attention.
The controversy began during the Osun State governorship campaign, when Okpebholo, campaigning for the APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji, accused the incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of spending the last four years dancing. Adeleke, who is Davido's uncle, fired back by calling Okpebholo jealous and incompetent. Davido then posted the governor's WAEC result, which was filled with Es and Ds, on his Instagram story, drawing widespread mockery.
Accusations of Rigging and Insults
In the interview, Davido escalated the feud by accusing Okpebholo of traveling to Osun State to rig the election. He also insulted the governor's conduct, saying, "You left your state, came to another state to rig. Then start talking that my uncle is a dancer, and he's not serious when the road to your government house is not done. First of all, you're not elected; you were selected. You didn't win those votes, sir. You don't know what it feels like to win an election. I feel sorry for his kids."
Davido further promised to visit Edo State when Okpebholo stands for re-election, a statement that suggests the feud is far from over. The musician's comments have fueled online debate, with many weighing in on the appropriateness of a celebrity publicly shaming a sitting governor.
Election Aftermath and Reactions
The political context is significant. Despite Okpebholo's efforts and those of other APC governors and chieftains, Adeleke won his re-election bid convincingly, securing 511,067 votes against Oyebamiji's 444,815 votes. Reports indicate that Okpebholo was mocked by residents when he left Osun State at midnight before INEC confirmed Adeleke's victory.
Davido's refusal to apologize underscores the deep political divisions in the country, with the artist positioning himself as a vocal critic of the Edo governor. His promise to campaign against Okpebholo in the future signals that this clash may have lasting implications for both politics and entertainment in Nigeria.
