Davido Faces Backlash Over Alleged Pinterest Cybertruck Gift to Mayorkun
Davido Under Fire Over Pinterest Cybertruck Gift to Mayorkun

Afrobeats superstar Davido is facing intense scrutiny after fans alleged that a photograph he used to announce a lavish gift to fellow singer Mayorkun was sourced from Pinterest. The controversy erupted when Davido posted an Instagram Story appearing to gift his former protégé a Tesla Cybertruck, a luxury electric vehicle valued at up to N340 million in Nigeria.

How the Controversy Unfolded

On 28 July 2026, Davido shared an Instagram Story featuring a photo of a Tesla Cybertruck with the caption: “My gift to you. I love you #iammayorkun.” He also tagged an associate, writing: “#babzii_chilling pls have it delivered 2moro.” The post did not mention any monetary amount, but the Tesla Cybertruck in the United States retails between $69,990 and $99,990 depending on the variant. In Nigeria, import duties and shipping costs push the price to an estimated N200 million to N340 million, according to market sources.

Eagle-eyed fans quickly noticed that the image appeared identical to a photograph published in a 2023 Dezeen article titled “Tesla Cybertruck launched and now in showrooms.” The article, released when the vehicle was first introduced, included that exact picture. This observation fueled claims that the photo was not originally taken by Davido but instead pulled from a stock or free image site.

Social Media Erupts With Mixed Reactions

The accusation triggered a wave of reactions online, with many questioning the authenticity of the gift. A popular blog account, Wizkid_blogger, posted: “Omo, when this man go stop all this childish behaviour? 30bingos how una wan defend this one now?” Another user, @ademm_adeyinka21, commented: “Wizkid sef don buy fake Rolex before for him manager?”

Comedian_harmattan wrote: “Davido is indefendable ??? if this English is correct ???” Meanwhile, @ibrahim_ayomi5 reacted sarcastically: “Have it delivered 2moro please ?” One user, @diamond_kirah, defended the star, saying: “Wizkid bloggers u de try Aswear Waytin davido don do for this life your family plus the one wey dem never born nor fit reach ham ??”

Another commentator, @giiffttedd, referenced past controversy: “Sophia was right when she said osakolor money is audio money, we can't know him better than the mother of his children ???” This alludes to recent remarks by Davido’s baby mama, Sophia Momodu, who claimed she alone provides for their daughter Imade using real money, not “audio money.”

@omohtaiwo reacted: “Haaaa, why dis guy like to Dey disgrace himself ???for competition?shuu omo why him life be like dis ?”

Davido’s History of Lavish Gifts Under Question

This is not the first time Davido’s public generosity has been doubted. The Afrobeats star has previously gifted cars, jewelry, and cash to friends and colleagues. However, the alleged use of a stock image has intensified scrutiny. Critics accuse the singer of manufacturing the gift to generate buzz ahead of an upcoming album release. One user wrote: “Davido went to Pinterest app to pick a cyber truck picture to congratulate Mayorkun that he bought car for him, just to chase clout for his very useles$ upcoming album.”

Mayorkun, whose real name is Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel, was signed to Davido Music Worldwide in 2016 and launched his independent career in 2021. Despite the separation, the two have remained publicly close, with Mayorkun often praising Davido’s support. However, the current controversy has placed their relationship under the microscope.

Sophia Momodu’s Recent Remarks Add Fuel

Legit.ng previously reported that Davido’s baby mama, Sophia Momodu, stirred fresh conversation online after appearing to take a subtle swipe at Davido during a live session. In the video, Sophia claimed to be the only one catering to their daughter Imade’s needs, saying: “Na only me my pikin get, nor be audio money. If bill come now from up, down, na me go settle am. Una know as e dey go. Make una leave all these audio money.”

The term “audio money” has since been used by netizens to mock Davido, implying that his wealth may not be as tangible as portrayed. This phrase appeared in several reactions to the Cybertruck gift controversy, linking the two incidents.

Public Reactions Continue to Divide

As of press time, Davido has not publicly addressed the accusations. Mayorkun has also remained silent. The controversy continues to trend on social media, with fans and critics debating whether the gift was genuine or a publicity stunt. The incident highlights the intense scrutiny celebrities face, especially when posting about lavish expenditures in a country where many fans struggle economically.

The Tesla Cybertruck itself has been a symbol of futuristic luxury since its announcement. Its distinctive stainless steel design and bulletproof windows make it instantly recognizable. However, its high import cost in Nigeria makes it an exceptional gift, one that would confirm Davido’s status as one of the country’s wealthiest musicians—if proven real.
