Kenneth Okonkwo, widely recognized for his role as Andy Okeke in the classic Nollywood film Living in Bondage, once seemed destined for political relevance. With national fame, communication skills, legal training, and a ready audience, he transitioned from Nollywood to political advocacy, becoming a prominent voice in Nigeria's opposition movement. However, his political journey has been marked by dramatic shifts, leaving many questioning his credibility.
From Screen Fame to Political Voice
During the 2023 elections, Okonkwo served as a devoted spokesman for the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, passionately defending Peter Obi and promoting a 'New Nigeria.' He presented Obi as a competent, credible, and transformational leader. Yet, he has since become a vocal critic, using media platforms to defame the man he once hailed as a messiah. Reports suggest he faces a potential defamation suit of up to ₦10 billion over allegations against Obi and the NDC South-East Caucus.
The Burden of Political Contradictions
Okonkwo's transformation from defender to critic has created a credibility crisis. Nigerians are left wondering which version of him to believe: the one who vouched for Obi's integrity or the one who now questions those qualities. His political moves have included stints with the PDP in 2014, the APC in 2015, the Labour Party in 2023, and now the ADC supporting Atiku Abubakar. Each shift has been accompanied by enthusiastic endorsements and subsequent criticisms of former allies.
The Peter Obi Factor
Okonkwo's relationship with Obi is particularly contradictory. Once a passionate advocate, he now attacks Obi's character. The South East Revival Group has highlighted this dilemma, noting that both positions cannot be true. Political commentator Dr. Katch Ononuju has alleged that disagreements over accommodation and financial expectations may have fueled Okonkwo's rebellion, though these claims remain unverified.
Perception vs. Reality
Okonkwo's criticisms increasingly appear personal rather than principled. His media appearances focus on attacking former allies instead of presenting alternative policies. This has led to a legal dimension with the proposed defamation suit, further damaging his public image. The irony is that Okonkwo still possesses qualities like articulateness and intelligence that could position him as a statesman, but he has chosen a path of perpetual confrontation.
A Political Identity in Crisis
Okonkwo's trajectory has left him trapped in contradictions. He entered politics with goodwill and advantages, but instead of building a stable identity, he has become known for controversy. To salvage his image, he must retrace his steps and rediscover constructive engagement. Until then, he risks being remembered as a political jester rather than a leader.
