A Nigerian lady has shared her thoughts on a video from Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo's burial, expressing her displeasure with how funerals are conducted in Abia State. The video, which surfaced online, shows the burial process in Arochukwu, Abia, where the actor was laid to rest.
Lady's Observation on Abia Burial Practices
Identified on X as @estherannuduma, the lady explained why she dislikes burials in Abia State. She noted that the body is taken to every compound (Ezi) the deceased is related to, with the ambulance opened and pictures paraded until reaching the final Ezi. She described the entire process as painful to watch, even for those who have accepted the loss.
In her post, she stated: 'But honestly, this is why I don't like the way burial is done in Abia State. You have to take the body to every Ezi that the person is related to and open the ambulance. Then you walk with the pictures until they get to the person's Ezi. The entire process is painful to watch. Even if you've come to terms with the fact that the person is gone, the process will break you all over again.' She clarified that it is a traditional activity.
Mixed Reactions from Social Media Users
Her observation sparked diverse reactions. User @2kingmekzy disagreed, stating that the practice is not universal in Abia and that the body is only taken to the deceased's father's compound before lying in state. @Whatever__247 questioned the benefit of such a process to the family. @favour37890 confirmed that it is the custom in Arochukwu. @roca0212 added that similar practices occur in Mbaise, recalling stops during their mother's burial. @gummybear11_ noted that Anambra State also has a similar 'last visit' tradition. @FestusOgechi2 clarified that the practice is specific to Arochukwu, not the entire Abia State.
