Toyin Adewale, the Nollywood actress and mother of Afrobeats star Mayorkun, has revealed that she once mistook music superstar Davido for a scammer when he first reached out to her son. She shared this story during an interview on Talk To B Show with Biola Bayo, which aired on YouTube on Saturday, June 13, 2026.
How Davido Discovered Mayorkun
Adewale explained that Mayorkun posted a cover of Davido's hit song "The Money," originally performed with Olamide Baddo. The cover went viral, catching Davido's attention. Shortly after, Davido sent a direct message to Mayorkun, but his mother was skeptical.
"Mayorkun made a cover for Davido's song with Olamide Baddo titled 'The Money' and posted it on social media. After the cover went viral, he was with his brother when Davido sent a message, but I thought it was a scammer," she recounted.
Davido's Phone Call Changed Everything
Davido followed up with a phone call, leaving Mayorkun ecstatic. According to Adewale, Davido requested Mayorkun's measurements and later met him and his brother, gifting them a box full of items and money. "Mayorkun was so excited and almost went crazy. Although I was scared at the time because I didn't know who Davido was," she said.
The next day, Mayorkun moved in with Davido and soon recorded his breakout single "Eleko." Adewale noted that Mayorkun's background in choir and poetry made the transition into music easier. When she later visited, Davido was welcoming and respectful.
