Sophia Momodu Sends Legal Notice to Caroline Hutchings Over Defamatory Snapchat Post

Businesswoman Sophia Momodu has served a Notice of Intended Legal Proceedings on actress and reality television personality Caroline Hutchings, popularly known as Caroline Danjuma, demanding an immediate retraction, an unreserved public apology, and substantial monetary compensation over an alleged defamatory social media publication. The notice, issued by Prince (Dr.) Richard Oma Ahonaruogho, SAN, of Ahonaruogho, Ahonaruogho & Co. (Paradise Law Firm), alleges that a Snapchat post made by Hutchings was widely interpreted by the public as referring to Momodu, causing serious reputational harm, emotional distress, and sustained cyberbullying.

Details of the Alleged Defamatory Post

The dispute stems from a Snapchat post by Hutchings in which she alleged that a woman she had once defended on national television was involved with her former partner while they were still in a relationship. The post read: “Funny how I pretend I am stupid but I know the girl I defended on national TV was sleeping with my man while I was with him. Now my ex… She was in clubs with her American friends twerking on him. I act like I don’t see it but I see it all.” The post continued with further derogatory remarks, including: “Posting his cars and sh!t… Now I know why your baby daddy didn’t choose you. You are dirt. You sleep with your friend’s man. You pretend like you like us, but you sleep with your friend’s man.”

Although Hutchings did not name anyone explicitly, the legal notice states that the publication generated widespread speculation across social media, with numerous users identifying Sophia Momodu as the person allegedly being referred to. The resulting online reactions subjected Momodu to cyberbullying, ridicule, malicious comments, and attacks on her character, integrity, and reputation.

Efforts to Resolve Amicably

According to the notice, in an effort to resolve the matter without litigation, Momodu personally reached out to Hutchings on 3rd July 2026, requesting that if the publication was not directed at her, Hutchings should issue a public clarification on the same platform stating that Momodu was not the person referred to. Despite receiving the message, Hutchings neither responded nor issued any clarification, allowing the speculation and public narrative to continue.

Demands and Potential Legal Action

The legal notice states that the publication caused Momodu considerable embarrassment, emotional distress, reputational harm, and injury to her standing among the public, family, friends, business associates, and society at large. Consequently, Momodu’s solicitors are demanding that Hutchings: publish an unequivocal retraction and an unreserved public apology on all her social media platforms; publish the same apology in national newspapers with nationwide circulation; pay substantial monetary compensation for the reputational harm and emotional distress; and provide a written undertaking to refrain from making any defamatory statements in the future.

The notice warns that failure to comply within the stipulated period will result in legal proceedings seeking, among other reliefs, ₦10 billion in general, aggravated, and exemplary damages, ₦50 million as solicitor’s professional fees, an order compelling a public retraction and apology, a perpetual injunction restraining further defamatory publications, and such further orders as the court may deem fit. The notice is signed by Prince (Dr.) Richard Oma Ahonaruogho, SAN.
