The Nigerian movie industry is in mourning following the death of popular actress and director Oby Kechere, widely recognized for her iconic role as Ms Koi Koi in the 2002 classic film Aki na Uwa.

The Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN) confirmed the news in an official statement released on Monday. According to the statement signed by Uche Agu, the guild's representative, Kechere passed away on April 27, 2026, after a prolonged illness.
“It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Madam Cecilia Oby Kechere. On behalf of the National Executive Council and the entire DGN family, I extend my deepest condolences to her family and loved ones,” the statement read in part.
