Nollywood actress and producer Ruth Kadiri has called on the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and other authorities to intensify efforts against counterfeit products flooding the Nigerian market. In a video message, she recounted her personal experience with a suspected fake garlic product and urged Nigerians to speak out against the growing menace.
Garlic Incident Raises Concerns
Kadiri shared that she bought garlic, blended it, and was shocked to find it had turned green upon returning. She described the incident as alarming and noted that many others have similar stories. The actress expressed fear about buying pre-packed drinks for her children, citing concerns about the potential health risks.
According to the filmmaker, fake products are not just a business issue but a direct threat to human lives. Nigerians unknowingly consume poorly produced or contaminated food, drinks, medicines, cosmetics, and household items, believing they are safe.
Call for Vigilance and Accountability
Kadiri advised parents and guardians to check expiry dates and NAFDAC registration numbers before purchasing regulated products. She emphasized that the consequences of counterfeit goods can be severe, especially for children. She said, "To parents, to guardians, please pay attention to expiry dates. Pay attention to NAFDAC numbers."
She also appealed to NAFDAC to prioritize the lives of Nigerians, noting that many people are falling sick due to fake medicines and products. Kadiri warned that those dealing in fake products will eventually be caught and treated as criminals.
Stricter Inspections and Punishment
The actress called for stricter monitoring of manufacturing companies and swift punishment for offenders. She cautioned against officials accepting bribes from producers of substandard goods, warning that such actions could harm their own families in the long run.
Kadiri urged Nigerians to reject the culture of silence and report suspicious activities in their communities. She stressed that collective action is essential to protect lives and hold both citizens and authorities accountable in the fight against counterfeit products.
