Former Super Eagles captain Austin 'Jay Jay' Okocha has disclosed that he came close to joining German giants Bayern Munich in 1991, but the transfer ultimately collapsed because of age restrictions and the club's unwillingness to offer a written contract.
Okocha's Impressive Youth Tournament Performance
Speaking on the Obi One Podcast, Okocha explained that Bayern Munich wanted to sign him after he impressed while playing with their youth team at a tournament in Switzerland. The German club's interest was strong enough that they made him an offer, but the deal fell through due to a combination of factors.
“I got an offer from Bayern Munich. I went with their youth team to a tournament in Switzerland, and after that, they wanted to sign me,” Okocha said. “Because I turned 18 in August, German rules stated that you had to turn 18 before July to play professionally that season. Because of that, I wasn’t even allowed to play in the promotion play-offs for the third division team I was playing for, even though we won our regional league and were aiming for the professional second division.”
Verbal Offer and Contract Concerns
Okocha revealed that Bayern Munich's offer was only verbal, as the club said they could not provide a professional contract until he turned 18. Since he turned 18 late in the year, he would have had to wait almost another year to sign a professional deal. During that waiting period, he would have trained with the professionals and played with the reserve team, a risk he was willing to take because Bayern were the biggest club in Germany.
However, Okocha was concerned about relying on a verbal agreement. He asked the club to put the offer in writing, but they refused. “I asked them, ‘Can you put it in writing on paper? Because I can’t come all the way from Nigeria to rely on a verbal contract. What if I get injured and you tell me to go home? I’ll have nothing.’ They replied, ‘Well, if you don’t accept it, we’re sorry,’” Okocha recounted.
Move to Borussia Neunkirchen and Eintracht Frankfurt
Following the breakdown of negotiations with Bayern Munich, Okocha joined third-division side Borussia Neunkirchen to start the season. During the winter transfer window, Eintracht Frankfurt stepped in with a more structured proposal, offering him a one-year amateur contract followed by a two-year professional contract. This offer provided the security Okocha was looking for, and he eventually moved to Eintracht Frankfurt, where he would go on to make a name for himself in the Bundesliga.
Okocha's revelation highlights the challenges young African players faced in European football during that era, particularly regarding contractual guarantees and age regulations. His decision to prioritize written assurances over a verbal agreement with a top club like Bayern Munich ultimately shaped his career path, leading him to Eintracht Frankfurt and later to other clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain and Bolton Wanderers.
