Actress Juliana Olayode has pushed back against singer Spyro and other critics who have called on Nigerian clergymen to publicly address the country's escalating insecurity and recent school abductions. In a statement shared on Instagram, Olayode asserted that pastors are not activists and should only speak on societal issues when they feel divinely compelled to do so.
Olayode's Stance on Clergy and Activism
Olayode emphasized that the primary role of religious leaders is spiritual guidance, not political or social activism. She argued that demanding pastors to speak out on every crisis places undue pressure on them and misunderstands their calling. According to her, pastors should not be forced into the role of activists, as their responsibility is to lead their congregations in faith, not to lead public protests or campaigns.
Criticism of Spyro and Others
The actress specifically called out singer Spyro, who had previously urged clergymen to use their platforms to condemn the wave of kidnappings and violence across Nigeria. Olayode countered that while everyone has a voice, pastors must discern when to speak based on divine direction, not public opinion. She cautioned against expecting religious leaders to fulfill roles that belong to civil society, government, and security agencies.
Olayode's comments have sparked mixed reactions online, with some supporting her view that pastors should focus on spiritual matters, while others argue that religious leaders have a moral duty to speak against injustice. The debate continues as Nigeria grapples with persistent security challenges, including mass abductions from schools and communities.
