Palace Denies Chieftaincy Title for Baba Ijesha
The palace of Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife, has officially denied claims that Nollywood actor James Olarenwaju, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, was conferred with a chieftaincy title by the monarch. The clarification comes after the actor sparked widespread reactions on social media by announcing the honor.
In an interview with PUNCH, the Ooni's spokesperson, Moses Olafare, addressed the issue directly. “I am not aware of the chieftaincy title, but I am aware of the car,” Olafare stated, referring to a vehicle reportedly gifted to the actor during his visit to the palace.
Ooni's Generosity Highlighted
Olafare elaborated on the Ooni's tradition of giving cars to individuals, noting that this practice is not unusual for the monarch. “Kabiyesi gives cars to people. This is not the first time. He has given cars to so many people, including kings and individuals, and it is not a new thing,” he said, citing past beneficiaries such as Haruna Ishola and Sefiu Alao.
Another palace source, speaking anonymously, dismissed the chieftaincy claim as “probably a joke,” adding, “I am not aware of the chieftaincy title.” This further distances the palace from the actor's assertions.
Baba Ijesha's Claim and Social Media Reaction
Baba Ijesha had earlier taken to Facebook to announce that he was honored with both a new car and a chieftaincy title by the Ooni. He claimed the title was “Baba Awada Konge Oduwa. Ile Ife, Ile Oodua.” The announcement quickly went viral, sparking debates and criticism online, with many questioning the legitimacy of the title.
The controversy gained further traction when the actor's wife, CEO Luminee, shared additional photos from their palace visit on Instagram on July 4, 2026. In her post, she referred to the Ooni as her father-in-law and expressed gratitude for his hospitality. “Your Imperial Majesty, thank you so much for the gracious reception and royal blessings. Your wisdom, generosity, and continuous support mean the world to our family,” she wrote.
Previous Controversy: Aso Ebi Prices
This is not the first time Baba Ijesha and his wife have sparked online debate. Earlier, the couple faced criticism after revealing expensive Aso Ebi prices for their newborn son's naming ceremony. The male package was listed at 250,000 naira, while the female fabric cost 350,000 naira for the August 27 event. Many social media users argued that the prices were exorbitant for an optional celebrity gathering, though others defended the couple's choices.
