Russell Andrews, 64, Reveals ALS Diagnosis

American actor A. Russell Andrews has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) at the age of 64. The veteran performer, widely recognized for his roles in television series such as Insecure and Better Call Saul, disclosed his condition during an appearance on CNN's The Story Is with Elex Michaelson. He was accompanied by his fiancée, actress Erica Tazel, who now serves as his caregiver.

Diagnosis and Support

Andrews revealed that he received the diagnosis in the fall of 2025. He expressed deep gratitude for the nonprofit ALS Network, which has provided a sense of community and essential support for the couple following the diagnosis. "It's been humbling, but Elex, there's also something in the fact that I walked into a family of very caring people I did not know a year ago," the actor said during the Saturday, May 16 broadcast, which aired in honor of ALS Awareness Month. He added, "The cliché 'family,' but they have not let us miss a step in terms of care, the attention, the awareness, and the ability to get me here today."

Early Signs and Challenges

The actor recalled experiencing possible symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic, which were initially attributed to a stroke. "Those were signs that were missed. And because I wasn't working for about three years, I lost my insurance," Andrews noted. He is also known for his performances in films like Straight Outta Compton and the medical drama Grey's Anatomy.
