Early Life and Education
Shannon Noelle DePuy was born on December 23, 1970, in Sanford, Florida, and raised in Tallahassee. She is the daughter of Marie Norris, a teacher, and Ed DePuy, a Leon County Commissioner. She has one brother, a former Navy pilot. Shannon attended North Florida Christian High School, graduating in 1988. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Liberty University in 1993, where she also won the Miss Virginia pageant title in 1990. She later obtained a law degree from Florida State University College of Law in 1996.
Beauty Pageant Career
Beyond winning Miss Virginia 1990, Shannon competed in the 1991 Miss America pageant as a top 10 finalist and scholarship recipient. In 1995, while in law school, she won Miss Florida USA and placed fourth in the Miss USA pageant.
Transition from Law to Journalism
After law school, Shannon interned with Congressman Bill McCollum, working on sexual harassment cases. She practiced law during the day while interning at WFTS (ABC affiliate) in Tampa at night. She lost that job but moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2001 to work as a reporter for WBTV (CBS affiliate). In 2004, she joined WRC-TV (NBC affiliate) in Washington, DC. There, she met Fox News managing editor Brit Hume, who encouraged her to apply at the network. She submitted audition tapes and joined Fox in November 2007 as a Washington-based correspondent.
Rise at Fox News
Shannon quickly established herself as a legal correspondent, covering the Supreme Court hearings on Guantanamo Bay detainees (2008), the Affordable Care Act challenges (2012), DOMA (2013), and same-sex marriage rulings (2015). She also reported from the 2016 Republican National Convention and presidential election. She hosted 'Fox News @Night' before moving to anchor 'Fox News Sunday' in the 10 a.m. ET slot. Personal Life
Shannon married her college sweetheart, Sheldon Bream, on December 30, 1995. Sheldon, a Liberty University graduate in Sports Management and Business, is a brain tumor survivor. Diagnosed at age 24, he underwent nine hours of surgery to remove a golf-ball-sized benign tumor. The surgery caused severe facial paralysis due to swelling, but he slowly recovered. Shannon recalled: 'It was a complete shocker. He was a college athlete, very healthy and strong. And he'd had an ear problem... they said, 'You've got a brain tumor. It's about the size of a golf ball and it's got to come out.' The tumor was benign, but the complication from swelling crushed some facial nerves. Over time, he regained movement. The couple has no children, but they have a dog named Jasper. Sheldon now runs Bream Speaker Management LLC, representing keynote speakers including his wife.
Health Challenges
Shannon has Map-Dot-Fingerprint Dystrophy, a genetic corneal condition that caused severe dry eye and pain. She wore glasses and contacts from a young age, but symptoms worsened in adulthood. The cornea would stick to her eyelid while sleeping, tearing upon waking. In 2017, she had surgery that resolved 95% of the issue.
