Nollywood actor Ugo Nwokolo has ignited a fierce online debate after stating that internet fraud, commonly known as 'Yahoo,' indirectly helps Nigeria's economy. His remarks came during a video discussion on the harsh economic realities faced by ordinary citizens.
Nwokolo Questions Survival on Low Salaries
In the video, Nwokolo pointed out that many civil servants earn between N50,000 and N90,000 monthly, which is insufficient to cover rising rents in major cities like Abuja and Lagos. He asked, 'How are they supposed to survive?' emphasizing that annual rents often run into millions of naira. 'Do you expect a civil servant to afford house rent of N3 million or N5 million in Abuja?' he questioned.
Yahoo Boys and the Property Market
The actor argued that the only people who can afford such high rents are wealthy individuals, including those involved in fraudulent activities. He claimed that internet fraud stimulates economic activity because fraudsters spend money on rent, luxury cars, and nightlife, thereby helping to 'keep the economy afloat.' However, Nwokolo quickly clarified that he does not endorse crime but was highlighting desperate circumstances driving Nigerians into fraud.
Social Media Reactions
His comments drew sharp criticism online. User Victor Uanhoro wrote, 'This one is mad. Yahoo contributed to the deteriorating of Nigeria economy. What is bad is bad even if everybody is doing it.' Another commenter, @theayogeorge, noted, 'You may have a point, but truth be told, Yahoo has done more harm to us than good. These rents you talked about wouldn’t have become so high if not for these Yahoo boys. Many landlords went bunkers upon knowing some other landlords have made more money by letting out their facilities to these guys. Nigeria’s image has been so battered that we all look like suspects when on international trip.'

This is not the first time Nwokolo has stirred debate. Earlier, the Mr Nigeria titleholder made headlines for stating he prefers women without money, explaining that such women are less demanding and more appreciative. That comment also generated widespread discussion on social media.
