Controversy Erupts as Woman Questions OPM Pastor's Marriage of Autistic Son to Mother of Three
A significant controversy has unfolded on social media following the wedding of Aboy, the autistic adopted son of Apostle Chibuzor Gift Chinyere, the General Overseer of Omega Power Ministries (OPM). The event, which initially garnered celebratory reactions, has now sparked intense debate after a woman publicly criticized the pastor's decision to arrange the marriage.
Details of the Wedding and Subsequent Disclosures
The marriage between Aboy and his bride went viral online, with many observers expressing joy over the union. However, the situation took a contentious turn when the bride disclosed after the wedding that she is a mother of three, and her children's father is deceased. This revelation raised questions about the timing of key disclosures and the overall arrangement.
Monetary gifts and other substantial presents were awarded to the woman for agreeing to marry the autistic man, adding another layer to the discussion about the motivations behind the marriage.
Woman's Criticism and Social Media Backlash
Identified on Facebook as Nsikan Louis, the woman has drawn public attention by slamming Apostle Chibuzor for his actions. In her post, she insisted that the pastor should be questioned rather than celebrated, arguing that the marriage is not an appropriate solution for someone who needs psychosocial support.
Her comments read in part: "So, this is the feedback I'm getting from the comment I dropped on OPM pastor's post justifying his action to marry off a young man who clearly is unaware of what is happening. The pastor married off the boy because according to him, he 'masturbates,' and has high libido. In saner climes, the pastor would be questioned. But here in Nigeria, he is celebrated, as well as his action justified by a group of retards."
She further elaborated: "How can marriage be the solution to a person that clearly needs psychosocial support? A young man is autistic and mentally unstable, the next thing you put a cash bait on him and marry him off, to the glee of an apparent mentally dislodged group of individuals."
Despite facing backlash and insults online, Nsikan Louis has stood firm on her opinion, stating that she will not remove her comment and that posterity will judge each person according to their deeds.
Broader Implications and Public Reaction
The controversy has ignited heated discussions across social media platforms, with many Nigerians sharing differing opinions. Some continue to celebrate the pastor's actions as a benevolent gesture, while others, like Louis, raise ethical concerns about the exploitation and lack of proper support for individuals with disabilities.
This incident highlights ongoing debates about the treatment of autistic individuals in Nigeria, the role of religious leaders in personal matters, and the societal norms surrounding marriage and mental health. It also underscores the power of social media in amplifying voices that challenge mainstream narratives.
As the story continues to develop, it remains a focal point for discussions on human interest, disability rights, and ethical responsibilities in contemporary Nigerian society.
