Digital African Woman Celebrates a Decade of Impact with Landmark Summit in Lagos

Digital African Woman marked its 10th anniversary with a significant summit held in Lagos, Nigeria, during the 2026 International Women’s Day convening. The event, themed “Accelerate Her Power: Rights. Justice. Action,” served as the organization’s first major gathering, celebrating a decade of advancing women’s economic and digital inclusion across Africa and the diaspora.

Summit Highlights and Strategic Focus

The summit brought together a diverse group of development stakeholders, tech professionals, and advocates to tackle structural barriers that hinder African women. Key issues discussed included limited financial access and digital skill gaps. HRM Khadijat Abdulkadir, the founder of Digital African Woman, established the initiative a decade ago in Belgium. It has since evolved from a diaspora-focused project into a comprehensive empowerment engine, supporting over 6,000 African and European migrant entrepreneurs by providing digital tools and financial literacy for sustainable business growth.

The Lagos event signaled a strategic shift towards deeper engagement with African ecosystems. The program was structured around three keynote addresses and three intensive panel sessions:

  • The first keynote reflected on the historical roots of International Women’s Day, emphasizing its foundation in movements for justice, fair wages, and equal civic participation. It highlighted that while the day is now a global recognition moment, its core purpose remains tied to sustained advocacy and structural progress.
  • The second session, titled “Patterns of Success,” offered a roadmap for women transitioning into leadership roles. It focused on strategies for women to position themselves as architects of the future digital economy, rather than mere participants.
  • The convening concluded with “The Queens’ Panel,” which explored how cultural influence and public platforms can be leveraged to protect women’s rights.

Key Themes and Organizational Insights

Throughout the day, speakers consistently returned to a central theme: empowering women is not only a social imperative but also a mechanical necessity for economic growth. The organizers emphasized that advancing women’s rights and economic power requires ongoing commitment, collaboration, and action from every sector of society. As the event concluded, they noted the importance of collective efforts to drive meaningful change.

This summit underscores Digital African Woman’s decade-long commitment to fostering gender equality and digital empowerment, setting the stage for future initiatives aimed at bridging gaps and enhancing opportunities for women across the continent.
