Broadcasting Awards Set to Honour Idris, Momoh, Otu, and Other Media Luminaries
The second edition of The Nigerian Broadcasting Awards (TNBA) is poised to celebrate key figures in Nigeria's media landscape, with honours bestowed upon prominent individuals for their substantial contributions to the industry. Among the distinguished awardees are John Momoh, Chairman of Channels Television; Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation; Bassey Edet Otu, Governor of Cross River State; Dauda Lawal, Governor of Zamfara State; Uba Sani, Governor of Kaduna State; and Obadiah Tohomdet, former Executive Secretary of the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON).
Event Details and Industry Endorsement
Scheduled for April 8, 2026, the ceremony will take place at the NAF Conference Centre in Kado, Abuja, from 6pm to 9pm. According to Yemisi Bamgbose, Executive Secretary of BON, the awards were officially endorsed by the 74th General Assembly of BON held in Kano in 2021. Bamgbose emphasized that the primary objective of TNBA is to celebrate excellence and promote quality media practice within the broadcast sector, reinforcing standards and innovation.
Awards Process and Categories
This year's edition commenced with a call for entries, which attracted a total of 204 submissions showcasing broadcast performances from the year 2024. The selection process was overseen by an Awards Selection Committee chaired by Danladi Bako, former Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC). The committee included members from key industry bodies such as the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) and a panel of carefully selected veteran broadcasters, ensuring a rigorous and impartial evaluation.
Winners will be unveiled across 24 diverse categories, encompassing both radio and television works submitted by private and public broadcast media houses. Notable categories include:
- Radio and Television Station of the Year
- Best Reporter of the Year
- Best Newscaster
- Best Producer of the Year
Additional Honourees and Posthumous Recognitions
Beyond the initial list, other awardees feature industry veterans such as Shyngle Wigwe, former Director General of NTA; Yemi Farounbi, former Managing Director of NTA and former Nigerian Ambassador to the Philippines; Abubakar Jijiwa, former Director General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON); Hajia Sa'a Ibrahim, former Director General of Abubakar Rimi Television and first female Chairman of BON; and Bimbo Oloyede, a respected broadcaster known for her astute contributions.
The event will also pay tribute to icons of the industry who are no longer alive, with posthumous awards slated for figures including Raymond Dokpesi, founder of DAAR Communications Plc; Timawus Mathias; Okokon Ndem; Anike Agbaje-Williams; and Mr. Patrick Ityohegh. Their legacies in advancing broadcasting will be commemorated as part of the ceremony's broader recognition efforts.

In addition to individual honours, corporate entities will receive recognition for their role in advancing broadcasting in Nigeria. Organisations set to be acknowledged include DAAR Communications Plc, MultiChoice Nigeria Limited, Desmins Broadcasting (DITV), and Voice of Nigeria. These recognitions highlight the collaborative efforts across the industry to foster growth and excellence in media practices.
