Over 600 Children in Iwaya Celebrate Christmas with Sant’Egidio Feast
Sant’Egidio Brings Christmas Joy to 600+ Lagos Children

Hundreds of children in the Iwaya area of Lagos State experienced a memorable Christmas celebration thanks to a special festive lunch organized by the Community of Sant’Egidio. The event, held on Christmas Day, brought together over 600 young beneficiaries and some elderly residents for a day of feasting, music, and gift-giving.

A Convivial Feast for the Community

The annual Christmas launch, held on December 25, 2025, transformed the day for many children who might otherwise have had a quiet celebration at home. Organizers arranged the seating with about 12 to 13 children around each table. A dedicated volunteer was assigned to coordinate every table, ensuring the event remained orderly and enjoyable for all attendees.

Beyond a hearty meal, the children were treated to lively music and received gifts to take home, creating a truly festive atmosphere. The initiative aimed to ensure that participants could celebrate the holiday "happily in a convivial atmosphere," as highlighted by the organizers.

Gratitude Amid Economic Challenges

Chidozie Mbaeri, the Lagos Coordinator for the Community of Sant’Egidio, expressed joy at being able to host the event once again. He stated that the core mission was to provide a rich meal for children who might not have one on such a significant day.

Mbaeri acknowledged the prevailing economic difficulties but emphasized the group's determination to proceed. He extended gratitude to all supporters whose contributions made the successful event possible, proving that community spirit can shine through challenging times.

Voices from the Celebration

The impact of the day was echoed by the beneficiaries. Joshua Hunkpe, one of the children present, shared that he would have simply been at home without the event. He expressed his thanks, saying, "God will continue to bless them to continue this."

Another beneficiary, Ebunoluwa Salako, applauded the organizers for their creative approach to celebrating Christmas with both children and adults. "I am so happy to participate because of the activities," Salako noted.

The sentiment of giving was also felt by the volunteers. Simi Giwa, a first-time volunteer, described her excitement at being part of the event, reinforcing that Christmas is fundamentally about community and sharing.

The Community of Sant’Egidio's Christmas lunch in Iwaya stands as a testament to the power of collective kindness, ensuring the festive season reached some of the community's youngest and most vulnerable members.
