President Tinubu Applauds Lagos State for Successful AFRIMA Hosting
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for the state's outstanding hosting of the prestigious All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA). The continental music extravaganza, which took place from January 7 to 11, 2026, marked the ninth anniversary of Africa's premier music awards ceremony.
Presidential Recognition for Nigerian Musical Excellence
In an official statement released through his spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu specifically highlighted the remarkable achievements of Nigerian artists who secured numerous accolades during the grand finale on January 11. The President emphasized that these victories serve as undeniable evidence of Nigeria's growing influence and respect within the global creative industry.
"I commend Lagos State for, once again, proving its capacity as Africa's creative and entertainment capital," President Tinubu declared. "I congratulate the Lagos State Government and His Excellency, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for the excellent hosting of Africa's global music awards and for providing a safe, vibrant and welcoming environment for delegates, artists and guests from across the continent."
Nigerian Artists Shine at Continental Platform
The 9th AFRIMA Awards, hosted by Lagos State as the official host city designated by the African Union Commission on April 9, 2025, witnessed an impressive performance by Nigerian musical talents. Among the notable winners were:
- Rema, who secured Artiste of the Year, Best Male Artiste in Western Africa, and Best African RnB & Soul awards
- Burna Boy, who claimed the prestigious Album of the Year award
- Shallipopi, who won Song of the Year and Best African Collaboration with Burna Boy
- Phyno, named Best African Hip-Hop artist
- Qing Madi, recognized as Most Promising Artiste
- Yemi Alade, awarded Best Soundtrack
- Chella, who received the African Fans' Favourite award
- Kenny Ogungbe and Dayo Adeneye, honored with the AFRIMA Legendary Award
Creative Economy as National Priority
President Tinubu, who himself received the Pillar of Art and Culture in Africa Award from the African Union Commission and International Committee of AFRIMA in 2015, emphasized the strategic importance of Nigeria's creative sector. He noted that Nigerian music has evolved into a powerful cultural ambassador that represents the nation across Africa and beyond.
"Your success on this great continental stage is a proud moment for our nation and a strong reflection of the depth of talent, creativity and hard work that define Nigeria's music industry," the President stated in his congratulatory message to the award-winning artists. "You have not only won awards; you have projected our culture, amplified the voice of our youths and strengthened Nigeria's creative identity across the continent and beyond."
The President further assured that his administration remains committed to prioritizing youth empowerment and developing Nigeria's creative economy. He highlighted how music, film, fashion, and other creative industries possess significant potential to generate employment opportunities, enhance tourism, and contribute substantially to national economic growth.
Lagos Solidifies Its Entertainment Leadership
The successful hosting of AFRIMA adds to Lagos State's growing reputation as Africa's entertainment hub. This achievement follows other notable international events recently hosted by the state, including the historic E1 powerboat race - the first ever held in Africa - and GITEX 2025, the world's largest gathering of technology entrepreneurs and enthusiasts.
Established in 2014 through a partnership between the International Committee of AFRIMA and the African Union Commission, the awards platform has grown into Africa's most significant music recognition event. The 9th edition attracted participation from more than 1,216 artists, delegates, and industry stakeholders representing at least 48 African nations, demonstrating the awards' extensive continental reach and cultural significance.
President Tinubu concluded his statement by encouraging Nigerian artists to continue utilizing their talents to inspire hope, foster unity, and cultivate national pride while making meaningful contributions to the expansion of Nigeria's creative economy and overall national development.
