Odyssey Hits N215 Million, Tops Hollywood Films in West Africa
Odyssey N215M Box Office: Tops Hollywood in West Africa

Odyssey, the latest Hollywood epic, has amassed a staggering N215 million at the West African box office, securing its place among the region's top-grossing Hollywood films. The figure, reported by the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), underscores the film's massive appeal across Nigeria and neighboring countries.

A Landmark Achievement for Hollywood in West Africa

According to CEAN's weekend box office report, Odyssey debuted strongly and maintained momentum, outperforming several major franchises. The film's West African haul now places it in the top five highest-grossing Hollywood movies ever released in the region, alongside titles like Avengers: Endgame and The Lion King.

“Odyssey's performance is extraordinary. It has resonated with audiences in a way few Hollywood films have,” said Dolapo Adeleke, a Lagos-based film analyst. “The N215 million figure is a testament to the film's universal themes and strong marketing.”

Breaking Down the Numbers

The N215 million gross includes revenue from all West African markets, with Nigeria contributing over 75% of the total. The film averaged N1.2 million per screen in its opening weekend, a record for a non-franchise Hollywood title. In comparison, the previous highest-grossing non-franchise film in the region, Dune, earned N98 million in its entire run.

Odyssey also benefited from a robust promotional campaign that included partnerships with local influencers and early screenings for critics. The film's positive word-of-mouth has kept audience numbers steady even weeks after release.

Regional Impact and Audience Response

The success of Odyssey in West Africa is part of a broader trend of Hollywood films performing well in the region. According to the African Cinema Association, the West African box office grew by 12% in 2025, driven by increased screen counts and rising disposable incomes. Odyssey alone accounted for nearly 3% of the region's annual box office revenue.

Cinema chains across Lagos, Accra, and Abidjan reported sold-out shows for the first two weekends. “We had to add extra screenings to meet demand,” said Chidi Okonkwo, manager of a major cinema in Lagos. “It’s been a while since we saw this kind of excitement for a film.”

What This Means for Future Hollywood Releases

The film's performance is expected to encourage more Hollywood studios to prioritize West Africa in their distribution strategies. Currently, many major releases debut in the region weeks after their global premieres, but the success of Odyssey could shorten that gap.

“Odyssey proves that West African audiences are hungry for quality content and will turn out in large numbers if given the chance,” Adeleke added. “Studios should take notice.”

As Odyssey continues its run, it is projected to reach N250 million before leaving cinemas. The film is also performing strongly in other African markets, with a total gross of over $7 million across the continent.
