Chinonso Onuoha, a Nigerian divorcee living in Germany, has publicly detailed the benefits she now enjoys after leaving her marriage, which she describes as abusive and toxic. In a social media post, she directly countered the stereotype that divorced women are bitter and frustrated.
Life After Divorce: A Newfound Freedom
Onuoha emphasized that life after divorce is 'maravilloso' (marvelous), especially for those with financial independence. She listed several aspects of her daily existence that have improved dramatically since the separation.
'Imagine living life without your abuser, whom you were obligated to serve and worship,' she wrote. 'The house becomes peaceful and quiet.' She highlighted that she no longer has to cook—a task she dislikes—and can use garlic without interference from her ex-husband's mistress dictating spices.
An End to Constant Criticism and Exhaustion
Onuoha recalled being constantly criticized and yelled at, and never allowed to rest. 'I was cleaning, ironing, and cooking round the clock,' she said. Now, she enjoys uninterrupted rest and quality time with her children without fear of being woken up in the middle of the night to face false accusations of cheating.
She also noted the absence of physical abuse: 'Nobody coming home to beat me because they fought with their side chick.' The fear of contracting sexually transmitted infections due to forced unprotected sex with a cheating husband has also vanished.
Emotional and Psychological Relief
The divorced mother stated that she no longer lives in constant fear or 'walks on eggshells.' She feels less drained and aged, and is no longer surrounded by friends of her ex-husband who knew about his infidelity but remained silent. 'Sleeping peacefully without anyone snoring beside you' was another benefit, though she added that she shared a room with her children anyway.
Above all, Onuoha emphasized that she no longer fears for her life. She challenged the notion that divorced women are desperate to get their exes back, pointing out that divorced men often rush into new marriages, while women like her enjoy their newfound freedom.
