Apostle Joshua Aghasedo of Powerline Church has declared that using sex toys within marriage is not a sin, drawing comparisons to everyday tools like cars and mobile phones. He made the remarks during a sermon broadcast on the church's official YouTube channel on Tuesday, August 12, 2026.
Pastor’s Stance on Sex Toys in Marriage
In the video, which has since gone viral, Aghasedo addressed the question directly: “Is using a sex toy a sin? Is driving a car a sin? A car to drive you from here to Dallas, is it a sin? Using the phone, is it a sin? So, the phone is the right equipment and the car is the right equipment.” He emphasized that his comments apply specifically to married couples, not to individuals.
The cleric revealed that he has personally suggested sex toys to a married couple before, after carefully assessing their circumstances. He explained, “I have suggested sex toys to a couple before when I look at all the surrounding circumstances, so that somebody won’t go out and other things would follow.” His goal, he said, was to protect the marriage and prevent infidelity.
Distinction Between Marital Use and Masturbation
Aghasedo drew a clear line between using sex toys with a spouse and using them alone. He stated, “If you engage in it on your own, it’s called masturbation and another word for masturbation is fornication.” He stressed that the practice is only acceptable “within the marital context.”
He also acknowledged the practical benefits of such devices, saying, “In this modern day of technology, it’s an equipment. It can help you do the job to 90%, and you finish the remaining 10%. I’m just being real. It can help you.” He clarified that he has never personally used a sex toy.
Mixed Reactions and Ongoing Debate
The pastor’s comments have sparked mixed reactions on social media, with many Nigerians debating whether sex toys have a place in Christian marriages. While some churches discourage their use entirely, other Christian leaders argue that intimacy between married couples is a private matter, as long as it stays within the boundaries of marriage.
The conversation around sex toys has grown in recent years, particularly as more couples openly discuss ways to address intimacy challenges in long-term relationships. The debate continues as religious and social perspectives evolve.
