A Nigerian woman, Sonia Chisom Chukwu, has publicly renounced feminism, stating that her initial embrace of the movement was fueled by anger toward her biological father. In a Facebook post, she explained that she now recognizes the positive influence of many men in her life, which has led her to change her stance.
From Anger to Appreciation
Chukwu wrote that she became a feminist because she was angry with her father. However, she now says she is giving up feminism due to the kindness shown to her by numerous men. She described herself as a “proud pick me woman” and said, “I no do again!”
She emphasized that the world is becoming toxic because people are busy hating and fighting each other. She stated, “We are all fighting from a place of pain, I’m fighting because I was angry at my dad! But I just realized that there are a million and one Good and kind men out there!”
Good Men in Her Life
Chukwu listed several men who have positively impacted her, including her husband, a taxi driver, her uncle Ifeanyi, her foster father Mr. Arthur Iloh, her best friend Barrister Onuora, Honorable Chima Obieze, her elder brother, and her God father Daddy Joshua. She noted that cooking for her husband, washing his clothes, and cleaning their home are not signs of weakness.
She recounted a life-threatening experience in 2018 when she nearly died from a ruptured appendix just before her WAEC exams. Rev. Fr. Franklin Eze, the principal of St. Paul’s College Eke, paid her hospital bills and WAEC fees. The doctor who operated on her, the MD of Unity Hospital Ngwo, was also kind and considerate, even waiving some bills. Mr. Arthur carried her on his back in the middle of the night because she couldn’t walk, and stayed at the hospital until she was discharged.
A Call to Women
Chukwu urged women to stop fighting men, stating that “Evil has no gender!” She pointed out that women have also committed crimes such as murder, kidnapping, rape, robbery, child trafficking, and abuse. She cited a recent incident where a woman stabbed her husband to death while he was sleeping.
She called for unity against corruption, bad leaders, insecurity, and hunger, rather than against men. She concluded, “I stand for love, I stand for inclusiveness. I do not believe men and women are equal; we are all abled differently.” She acknowledged that women are superior in some areas and men in others, and that competition is unnecessary. She said, “Nature has made men leaders! God too made them Heads! Let us allow them Lead while we contribute to make the leadership worthwhile!”
