Nigerian singer Brymo has sparked fresh debate in the music industry by urging some of the country's biggest Afrobeats stars to retire and make way for a new generation of artists. In a recent interview with TVC, the 'Ara' hitmaker argued that the industry's continued focus on veterans like Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy is hindering the rise of younger talents.
Brymo Questions 'Big 3' Narrative
Brymo expressed concern that the so-called 'Big 3' narrative—centering on Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy—is preventing emerging artists from getting the recognition they deserve. He stated that discussions in Nigerian music should no longer be dominated by veteran stars, given that younger artists are pushing the culture forward.
"We need to stop talking about how the new artists don't have lyrical substance and focus on how some artists want to lock down the industry for themselves with the 'Big 3' narrative and continue reigning forever," Brymo said.
The singer emphasized that the industry should evolve naturally, with each generation getting its chance to lead. He specifically pointed to Rema as an artist who should already be dominating pop culture conversations across the country.
Rema Should Be the Biggest Pop Star
According to Brymo, the Mavin Records star has done enough to earn the top spot. "Right now, Rema should be the biggest pop star in the country without any doubt," he stated. He questioned why discussions still revolve around names such as Wizkid, Burna Boy, Olamide, and 2Baba when younger acts continue to break records and gain international recognition.
Social Media Reactions
The interview quickly went viral, drawing mixed reactions from social media users. Many disagreed with Brymo's stance, arguing that the veterans should not be forced to step aside while they are still producing hit songs.
- @mistypleasure commented: "This bros is high on something. I am not sure what it is though. The youngins have to displace them and not them leaving the scene for them. They have to force themselves into the conversation."
- @justfarruk wrote: "People saying he is speaking facts is delusional for real. Cause I don't understand why you will expect these guys to step aside when they are still popping. And I repeat, there's no way Rema outselling Wizkid in any aspects of music."
- @_yvgeneral shared: "Na only for Nigeria dem dey force artist to retire by all means. But he go hard una with the big 3 o. As an up and coming artist na international fans ft save you."
Brymo's Controversial History
This is not the first time Brymo has stirred controversy. Earlier, an old interview resurfaced in which he made remarks about singer Simi, saying she would have to "lay with him" before they could collaborate. That statement drew widespread criticism from Nigerians.
Brymo's latest comments have reignited the debate over the dominance of veteran artists in Afrobeats and the role of younger stars like Rema. As the industry continues to evolve, it remains to be seen whether the 'Big 3' will heed his call or continue to reign supreme.
