LGRhythms Foundation Intensifies Campaign Against Rising Kidney Failure in Nigeria
Concerned by the escalating prevalence of kidney failure across Nigeria, the LGRhythms Foundation has significantly ramped up its efforts to raise public awareness. The organization is actively educating communities on prevention strategies, early detection methods, and effective management of this life-threatening disease. This initiative is part of the foundation's long-standing humanitarian outreach, which targets terminal illnesses through sustained advocacy and support.
Awareness Walk and Public Engagement in Lagos
Speaking at a recent awareness walk in Lagos, the President of the LGRhythms Foundation, Lawal Kazeem, emphasized the critical need for action. The walk, which commenced at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) and concluded at the Ikeja Local Government Secretariat, included informative lectures highlighting kidney failure as a severe health menace. This annual charity event, now in its 11th year, consistently focuses on a specific terminal disease to sensitize the public, with the 2026 edition dedicated to combating kidney failure under the theme "Eko Connect."
Kazeem expressed deep concern over the increasing incidence of kidney-related conditions among younger populations, noting alarming cases of individuals under 18 requiring dialysis. He underscored the urgency of intervention, revealing that the foundation has allocated approximately N5 million for the 2026 campaign. This funding is directed towards covering dialysis bills for patients at LASUTH and executing comprehensive awareness programs to reach a broader audience.
Emphasis on Preventive Healthcare and Lifestyle Changes
Commandant of this year's charity walk, Adewale Bolaji, stressed the importance of preventive healthcare and lifestyle modifications in mitigating kidney failure risks. "Kidney failure is becoming too prevalent in our society. The kidney is a vital organ, and once it fails, the entire body system is at risk. That is why we are encouraging people to understand how to take care of themselves," he stated. Bolaji detailed that the event featured multiple activities, including:
- Direct support to patients undergoing treatment at LASUTH.
- Distribution of educational materials on kidney health.
- A community walk to spread awareness and foster public engagement.
On preventive measures, Bolaji advised Nigerians to adopt healthier lifestyles, such as reducing alcohol consumption, avoiding smoking, and maintaining adequate hydration as recommended by medical experts. These steps are crucial in lowering the risk of kidney disease and promoting overall well-being.
Direct Interventions and Future Initiatives
In her remarks, Connect Director of the foundation, Adedoyin Adepitan, highlighted the group's direct interventions at hospitals, including financial assistance for dialysis treatments. Adepitan urged Nigerians to prioritize regular medical check-ups and adopt healthier dietary habits to prevent kidney issues. She added that the foundation's Eko Connect initiative is a yearly campaign designed to spotlight critical health challenges while providing both education and direct medical support to affected individuals. Through these efforts, the LGRhythms Foundation aims to curb the rising tide of kidney failure and improve health outcomes across Nigeria.
