Borno State Government Announces Major Healthcare Recruitment Drive
The Borno State government has taken a significant step to bolster its healthcare system by directing the employment of 473 health professionals. This initiative aims to address staffing shortages and enhance medical services across the state.
Recruitment Details and Rural Incentives
Governor Babagana Zulum issued the directive to Prof. Abubakar Kullima, Chief Medical Director of the State Hospital Management Board (BHMB), to recruit doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and laboratory scientists. The new hires will be deployed to general hospitals and newly inaugurated Primary Health Care Centres (PHCs) throughout Borno. In a move to incentivize service in remote areas, the governor also called for the implementation of a 100 per cent rural allowance for doctors. Nurses assigned to hard-to-reach locations will receive a 40 per cent allowance, while doctors in rural communities will see their financial remuneration doubled.
Expanding Healthcare Access and Specialized Services
This recruitment is part of broader health sector interventions by the Zulum administration, which include special training funds for resident doctors and the commissioning of new facilities such as Eye and Dental hospitals. These efforts are designed to expand access to specialized care across Borno's three Senatorial Districts. The workforce expansion will also include critical technical support staff, such as primary eye care and peri-operative care nurses, ensuring comprehensive medical coverage.
Addressing Rural Healthcare Challenges
The initiative is strategically aimed at attracting and retaining qualified medical personnel in rural communities, where service conditions are challenging and there is a critical shortage of healthcare staff outside Maiduguri. By offering enhanced allowances, the government hopes to improve retention rates and ensure that underserved populations receive adequate medical attention. This policy underscores the state's commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery and addressing disparities in access to health services.
