Nigeria's Healthcare Sector Expands as WHX Lagos 2026 Targets Investment Opportunities
Nigeria's healthcare sector is undergoing a rapid transformation, with projections indicating a 7.1 per cent growth and an estimated market value of $161.7 million by 2027. This expansion is fueled by a $1.2 billion investment from the Federal Ministry of Health, focusing on infrastructure and workforce development. Additionally, the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority is driving major oncology and diagnostic expansions, while increased imports under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) are further boosting the sector.
Challenges and Opportunities in Healthcare Financing
Despite these significant gains, about 70 per cent of healthcare expenses in Nigeria are still paid out-of-pocket, highlighting a critical need for private sector participation and innovation. This gap presents substantial opportunities for investors and stakeholders to contribute to a more sustainable healthcare system.
West Africa's Medical Device Market on the Rise
Data from Statista reveals that Nigeria leads West Africa's medical device market, which is projected to surge from $414.8 million in 2025 to $632.48 million by 2030, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.56 per cent. Other countries in the region, including Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Senegal, and Ghana, are also experiencing strong growth. This trend is driven by:
- Hospital modernisation efforts
- Expansion in digital diagnostics
- Gradual progress toward universal health coverage
Progress and Population Pressures
Analysts note that Nigeria is making steady progress toward building a more accessible, affordable, and high-quality healthcare system through:
- Strategic investments
- Technological advancements
- Regulatory reforms
- A growing focus on preventive care
However, the country's rapidly growing population—projected by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to reach 250 million—continues to widen gaps in both primary and specialised healthcare services, underscoring the urgency for continued development.
