FUTATH Denies Union Allegations, Calls for Dialogue Over Strike Threat
The management of the Federal University of Technology, Akure Teaching Hospital (FUTATH) in Ondo State has firmly refuted allegations made by the Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP), Ondo State Council, regarding arbitrary staff removals, demotions, and intimidation. In a statement issued by the hospital's Head of Public Relations, Tope Fayehun, the management described these claims as unfounded and misleading, asserting that all actions taken by the current administration strictly adhere to established frameworks and best practices applicable to federal teaching hospitals nationwide.
Management Reaffirms Commitment to Staff Welfare and Healthcare Excellence
With NUAHP threatening a shutdown after issuing a notice of withdrawal of service, FUTATH management has reiterated its dedication to staff welfare and the delivery of world-class healthcare. Fayehun emphasized that operational decisions are focused on optimizing service delivery for patients who travel from various regions seeking quality care. The hospital operates within transparent and collaborative processes that have garnered acclaim from the majority of workers, ensuring that patient needs remain a top priority.
The management also denied all allegations against the Chief Medical Director (CMD) and the hospital administration, labeling the union's position as a misrepresentation of the hospital's governance culture. In response to the union's planned action, FUTATH urged NUAHP executives and members to shelve their threats and instead engage constructively through ongoing dialogue channels. The management stressed that union cooperation is vital to sustaining progress and the transitioning process, while ensuring uninterrupted compassionate care for patients.
Historical Context and Future Vision for FUTATH
The statement highlighted the hospital's transformation since its ceding to the federal government, noting that prior to this, the facility struggled with inefficiencies that fueled health tourism and compelled residents to seek treatment outside Ondo State. The federal takeover aimed to restructure the hospital into a functional federal tertiary medical centre. Under the direction and backing of the Federal Ministry of Health, the management has made deliberate strides to:
- Upgrade facilities and enhance coordination
- Strengthen regulatory oversight and address organisational gaps
- Position the hospital to deliver superior healthcare services
FUTATH management remains open to dialogue and amicable resolution, inviting all stakeholders to witness their dedication firsthand. The goal is to build a hospital that stands tall among its peers nationwide, fostering a collaborative environment for the benefit of both staff and patients.
