Lafarge Africa has reaffirmed its dedication to women's empowerment through a free breast cancer screening initiative in Lagos, conducted in collaboration with Leadway Health. Held at the Primary Health Care Centre in Akerele, Surulere, the event marked International Women's Day 2026 and aligned with the company's theme, "The Give to Gain Blueprint: Investing in Women for Sustainable Impact."
Addressing a Critical Health Challenge
Breast cancer remains the most prevalent cancer among Nigerian women, with approximately 88 new cases diagnosed daily. It accounts for about 22.7% of all female cancers, and many patients present at advanced stages, leading to high mortality rates. This initiative aimed to tackle key issues such as limited screening, late detection, and restricted access to treatment.
Comprehensive Health Services Provided
Participants received professional screening, medical consultations, and targeted health education. The program emphasized the importance of early detection in reducing breast cancer's impact. Gabriel Pollyn, Head of Sustainability and Sponsorship at Lafarge Africa Plc, noted that the initiative helps bridge critical gaps in healthcare access and information, encouraging women to take charge of their health.
Expert Medical Insights
Dr. Olukemi Albert-Udoh, Occupational Health Coordinator, and Dr. Atere Abisola, Team Lead at Leadway Health, provided medical insights, highlighting the significance of regular check-ups and early detection. They urged participants to share knowledge within their communities. Adetoro Baiyewu, Supervisor for Health at Surulere Local Government, commended the initiative for bringing essential healthcare services closer to the grassroots.
Sustainable Impact Commitment
Lafarge Africa remains focused on driving sustainable impact. Through initiatives like this, the company is committed to improving access to essential healthcare and advancing women's wellbeing in the community.
