Lagos Govt Orders Probe into Medical Negligence in Death of Chimamanda Adichie's Son
Lagos probes medical negligence in death of Adichie's son

The Lagos State Government has launched a full-scale investigation into allegations of medical negligence following the tragic death of Nkanu Nnamdi, the 21-month-old son of world-renowned Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Governor Sanwo-Olu Directs Immediate Investigation

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the state's Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) to commence a comprehensive, independent, and transparent probe into the incident. The directive came after the government received a detailed account from Adichie herself concerning the circumstances that led to her son's passing.

The infant, one of Adichie's twin boys, died on January 6, 2026, at the Euracare hospital in Lagos after what was described as a brief illness. In a statement released on January 10, the celebrated author accused the medical facility of criminal negligence.

In an official statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, the state government described the event as deeply distressing. The statement extended the government's sincere condolences to Adichie and her family, acknowledging that the loss of a child is a profound tragedy.

Scope of the HEFAMAA Probe

The investigation, which has already begun, aims to unravel both the immediate and underlying causes of the young child's death. A core objective is to determine whether there were any lapses in professional medical standards or conduct.

HEFAMAA has statutory authority to regulate and monitor all health facilities in Lagos, both public and private. As part of the ongoing inquiry, officials from the agency have already visited the Euracare hospital involved.

The state government emphasized its zero-tolerance policy for medical negligence or unprofessional conduct in any healthcare institution operating within its jurisdiction. The investigation will scrutinize several critical areas:

  • Compliance with established clinical protocols and patient safety standards.
  • The professional conduct of all medical personnel involved.
  • The specific roles and responsibilities of all parties present during the incident.

HEFAMAA will collaborate with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and other relevant regulatory bodies to ensure a holistic and credible review process.

Commitment to Transparency and Justice

The Lagos State Government has assured the public, and particularly the bereaved family, of its commitment to a just outcome. The statement confirmed that the findings of the investigation will be made public upon completion to ensure transparency and public accountability.

It further warned that any individual or institution found culpable of negligence, professional misconduct, or regulatory violations would face the full consequences as prescribed by law.

While urging the public to remain calm and avoid speculation, the government reiterated its dedication to safeguarding the health, safety, and rights of all Lagos residents. This tragic incident has prompted a reaffirmation of the state's commitment to strengthening medical oversight to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The government concluded its statement by once again extending its deepest sympathies to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her family during this extremely difficult time.
