In a shocking development at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), a member of the hospital's staff, identified as Aliye Saka, has tragically passed away. The incident occurred within the hospital premises, where the deceased, popularly known as Baba Niye, was found lifeless in a toilet facility.
Details of the Unfortunate Event
The ambulance driver, who was attached to the hospital's ambulance bay, died on Monday, January 26, while using the restroom. According to reports from Nigerian Tribune, the discovery was made several hours after he had entered the facility. A food vendor at the hospital, Mama Bola, expressed profound shock over the sudden death, noting that the deceased displayed no visible signs of illness prior to the incident.
"After he excused himself to use the toilet, his body was found there. We became aware of the situation when another person came knocking on the toilet door, but received no response," Mama Bola explained. She added that about an hour later, when the man returned and still got no answer, he forced the door open to find Baba Niye's lifeless body seated on the toilet.
Reactions from Hospital Personnel
A medical doctor at LASUTH, Dr. Babalola, has confirmed the occurrence, adding to the official acknowledgment of the tragedy. When contacted, Comrade Odedeyi Adekunle, the Chairman of the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) at the hospital, also confirmed the incident but declined to provide further comments.
"The deceased is one of our members, but I cannot comment on the incident because I am only allowed to respond to union matters," Adekunle stated, highlighting the sensitive nature of the situation.
Community in Mourning
The unexpected death has left the hospital community in a state of mourning and disbelief. Colleagues and acquaintances remember Baba Niye as a dedicated staff member who showed no prior indications of health issues. This incident raises questions about workplace safety and health monitoring in medical facilities, though no official cause of death has been disclosed at this time.
As investigations potentially unfold, the focus remains on supporting the bereaved family and colleagues during this difficult period. The tragic loss serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictability of life, even within environments dedicated to healthcare and healing.
