Nigeria Health Expert Warns of Rising Adenoid Cases in Children, Offers 8 Tips
Nigeria Expert Warns of Adenoid Surge in Kids, Shares Tips

Rising adenoid issues in children across Africa and beyond are leading to increased surgeries and health complications. Health expert Priscilla Canice-Obi has shared vital dietary recommendations to naturally boost children's immune systems, emphasizing balanced hygiene practices and cautious antibiotic use to prevent adenoid-related health challenges.

Abuja Health Coach Raises Alarm

An Abuja-based health coach, Priscilla Canice-Obi, has raised concerns over the rising cases of adenoids among children. Adenoids are small glands active during early childhood that gradually shrink as a child grows. Their primary function is to trap bacteria and viruses entering through the mouth and nose. For many parents, adenoids remain mysterious, yet many families face difficult experiences as children increasingly require surgery for adenoid-related complications.

Priscilla explained why adenoids become a major health concern: when they trap bacteria and viruses, they enlarge. As they trap more germs, they continue growing, eventually blocking the airway. She described it as adding clothes to a laundry bag until it swells. The adenoids become so enlarged that they obstruct breathing, indicating they have become overwhelmed.

The wellness expert noted that affected children often struggle with breathing difficulties, stuffy noses, frequent catarrh, and recurring ear infections. Since the ear, nose, and throat are interconnected, problems in one area affect others. Many children continue snoring even after treatment, and the condition can become life-threatening due to constant obstructive breathing.

Priscilla, founder of Nature First Global Resources Limited, observed that while some parents opt for adenoidectomy (surgical removal), nasal sprays, or nebulisers, these methods do not always provide permanent solutions. In some cases, surgery may need repeating.

Eight Recommendations for Adenoids

Highlighting eight recommendations for addressing adenoid health challenges, Priscilla advised parents to prioritize nutrient-rich foods such as leafy green vegetables, grass-fed beef, and local chicken eggs, which are packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. She also recommended extended breastfeeding and inclusion of natural immune boosters like scent leaves, lemongrass, and bitterleaf in children's diets.

Detailed Tips from the Expert

  1. Build immune system from conception: Eat natural foods rich in vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants, such as oranges, carrots, leafy greens, grass-fed beef, liver, and local chicken eggs.
  2. Avoid over-reliance on prenatal medications: Eat healthy and take simple folic acid. The same manufacturers often produce medications for adenoids, ADHD, and autism.
  3. Breastfeed your baby: Breastmilk, especially colostrum, is loaded with antibodies that build defense mechanisms. Children in local communities breastfed longer rarely face these issues.
  4. Introduce herbs early: Use ginger, onions, garlic in cooking; add scent leaves, lemongrass, bitterleaf to soups and rice. Give ginger shots and black seed oil to strengthen immunity.
  5. Limit sugary foods: Sweets, soda, chocolate, packaged juices, biscuits, cakes destroy the immune system.
  6. Allow outdoor play: Children should interact with natural bacteria through sand, dirt, mud, and grass to train their immune system. Over-cleanliness with antiseptics and hand sanitizers leads to infections and allergies.
  7. Minimize synthetic antibiotics: Overuse causes antibiotic resistance. Build natural defense through diet and herbs.
  8. Question vaccinations: Do not allow children to be a dumping ground for all vaccines. Protect them through informed decisions.
