Olaopa Praises Wada's IVF Breakthroughs

The Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC), Prof. Tunji Olaopa, has commended the remarkable achievements of Dr. Ibrahim Wada, founder of Nisa Premier Hospital, in addressing female infertility through In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF). During a courtesy visit to Wada in Abuja on Friday, Olaopa expressed his long-standing admiration for the medical pioneer, noting that Wada has been nationally recognized since 1999 when the first successful IVF birth at Nisa Premier Hospital was announced.

Significance of Wada's Contributions

Olaopa emphasized the profound impact of Wada's work, stating that understanding the stigma and societal pressures surrounding infertility in Nigeria makes the vision and contributions of Dr. Wada and his colleagues to reproductive medicine truly commendable. He recalled a previous interaction with Dr. Wada and his wife, Rabi Wada, which deepened his respect for them.

Inspiration from Prof. Claude Ake

Reflecting on why he celebrates societal icons, Olaopa shared how the late Prof. Claude Ake inspired him through a foreword written for Olaopa's 1997 book. In that foreword, Ake remarked that Nigeria yearns for heroes but acknowledges none, devaluing and derailing potential heroes. Olaopa noted that his visit to Nisa Premier Hospital was part of a mission to honor a true medical icon.

Olaopa acknowledged Wada's substantial impact on the health sector, which the nation deeply appreciates. He urged Wada to advance further by engaging in policy and advocacy efforts.

Response from Dr. Wada and Hospital Management

Dr. Wada, joined by the Group Managing Director Dr. Moses Shuaibu and Managing Director Dr. Nonso Ogbuefi, expressed that the visit was memorable. Dr. Shuaibu appreciated Olaopa's presence and noted that the hospital aims to realize the founder's vision, which requires broad support, particularly from the government in areas like electricity and taxation. He highlighted the hospital's significant electricity challenges, contrasting them with his experience practicing in the United Kingdom where such issues are absent.
