Nurses in Ondo Threaten Night Shift Boycott After Armed Attack on Health Centre
Nurses and midwives in Ondo State have issued a stern ultimatum to boycott night shifts following a violent armed attack on a primary health facility in Akure, the state capital. The incident, which occurred over the weekend, has sparked widespread safety concerns among medical personnel, prompting calls for immediate security enhancements at all public health centres.
Violent Incident at Oke Ijebu Health Centre
Unidentified gunmen targeted the Oke Ijebu Health Centre within the Akure metropolis, assaulting medical staff on duty and stealing valuables. The attack has been described as a clear indication of worsening insecurity in the state, particularly as it took place in the heart of the capital city. Felix Orobode, Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Ondo State Council, emphasized the severity of the situation, stating that such an event in Okejebu highlights serious security challenges.
Security Deficiencies Exposed
Orobode expressed deep concern over the lack of adequate security personnel at public health facilities, noting that many centres rely on elderly guards who lack proper training or equipment. He pointed out that the security guard at the attacked facility was an unarmed elderly man without any security training, a common issue across most health centres. The attackers reportedly forced their way into the facility, beat the staff on duty, and abducted some individuals, later abandoning them near Olokuta Prison along Ondo Road.
Call for Government Action
The NANNM chairman stressed that the primary responsibility of any government is the security of lives and property, urging immediate action from authorities. He warned that fear among health workers could severely impact service delivery, as staff may become hesitant to attend to patients during vulnerable hours, such as night shifts. Discussions have already begun with the state's Commissioner for Health and the Akure South Local Council Chairman to address these pressing security concerns and prevent future incidents.
