Subsidised IVF Treatment for 12 Couples via Partnership

Twelve couples facing fertility challenges have been enrolled in a partnership between the Wilson O. A. R. Initiative and Fertpromax Fertility Clinic, designed to help those seeking children but unable to afford full in-vitro fertilization (IVF) costs. The collaboration provides up to 70 percent financial assistance to low-income earners and couples who have been waiting for a child for at least ten years.

Initiative Background

The program was launched at the behest of Hon. Olajide Rainy Wilson as part of his 50th birthday celebration. The Wilson O. A. R. Initiative, a corporate social responsibility platform inaugurated at his birthday party in Kigali, Rwanda, addresses the significant financial barriers faced by low-income couples battling infertility in Nigeria.

Wilson stated, "This initiative, though prompted by the realization of huge access impediments facing fertility-challenged couples, especially those in the low-income pool, is meant to widen access to IVF services so they can share in the joyful moments of parenthood."

Cost Challenges

According to Wilson, "Cost is the biggest single impediment to accessing IVF services in Nigeria. A single cycle costs between three to 15 million naira, which is unaffordable for the average Nigerian. To make matters worse, IVF services are largely offered by the private sector and are not covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), which primarily focuses on civil servants in federal and state MDAs."

The partnership received over 4,000 entries from across Nigeria and a few other West African countries within the two-week registration window. The initiative's management screened entries based on financial standing, duration of waiting for a child, medical suitability, and willingness to adhere to the physical demands of the procedure.

Wilson explained, "After the initial screening, we shortlisted over 20 entries and invited prospects for further screening, from which we selected the 12 couples who have begun treatment. The treatment offer is tailored to each candidate's medical needs, including ovum or sperm donation and surrogacy options, covering sperm and egg extraction, medication, tests, IVF proper, and embryo transfer."

Future Plans

Wilson, who also serves as Managing Director of Fertpromax Fertility Clinic, noted that this initiative is his way of giving back to society. He plans to run one cycle this year and hopes to increase to two cycles in subsequent years. He encouraged those not included in this inaugural cycle and others who qualify to apply when the portal opens for future cycles.
