Emzor Advocates for Investment and Stronger Maternal Health Rights in Nigeria

As Nigeria observed the International Day for Maternal Health and Rights (IDMHR) on April 11, 2026, Emzor Group issued a compelling call for increased investment and enhanced protection of maternal health rights. The company simultaneously announced an expansion of its initiatives to provide preventive and life-saving interventions for mothers across the nation.

Global Context and Nigeria's Maternal Health Crisis

The IDMHR, marked annually on April 11, highlights the critical need for equitable, respectful, and high-quality maternal care worldwide. The 2026 theme, "Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls," emphasizes the urgency of eliminating preventable maternal deaths, strengthening midwifery systems, and safeguarding women's health rights, particularly in low-resource settings like Nigeria.

Nigeria continues to face a severe maternal health crisis, bearing a disproportionate share of global maternal mortality. According to the World Health Organization's Trends in Maternal Mortality 2000–2020 report published in 2023, the country records an estimated 993 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. This staggering figure accounts for approximately 28 to 29 percent of global maternal deaths, translating to roughly 82,000 maternal deaths annually, or more than 200 deaths daily, largely from preventable causes.

Emzor's Call to Action and Strategic Initiatives

In response to this dire situation, stakeholders, including Emzor Group, are emphasizing the necessity for sustained investments, robust health systems, and improved access to essential maternal health services and commodities. Pharm. Uzoma Ezeoke, Executive Director of Emzor Group, stated that maternal health must be prioritized as a fundamental right rather than a privilege.

"Ensuring safe pregnancy, childbirth, and postnatal care for all women requires deliberate investment, resilient health systems, and sustained collaboration between public and private sector actors," Ezeoke explained. She added that improving maternal health outcomes demands a holistic approach integrating prevention, nutrition, and access to life-saving medicines, with Emzor committed to building a future where no woman dies while giving life.

Mr. Kunle Faloye, Head of Marketing at Emzor, detailed the company's role in supporting healthcare systems with high-quality, affordable pharmaceutical products addressing critical maternal health needs. "Our interventions span nutrition, prenatal care, and postpartum support," he said, noting that investments in local manufacturing aim to improve access, ensure supply reliability, and deliver better outcomes for mothers and newborns.

Expanding Maternal Health Solutions Through Local Production

Through its subsidiary, Zolon Healthcare Limited, Emzor has expanded its footprint in maternal health solutions. A key offering is Eprostol, a misoprostol formulation that supports obstetric indications such as postpartum hemorrhage management and cervical ripening, aligning with clinical guidelines. Notably, this product is the first locally manufactured misoprostol suite in Nigeria, providing healthcare professionals with reliable options for maternal care.

Pharm. Obiajulu Onwuzor, Head of Marketing at Zolon Healthcare, affirmed that the subsidiary focuses on delivering quality-assured, locally manufactured solutions aligned with clinical best practices. "Strengthening local production capacity is helping to close critical gaps in access to essential maternal health medicines," she stated.

Emzor's interventions also include the preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy with its product Maldox, which reduces the risk of maternal anemia and low birth weight in newborns, in line with WHO recommendations. Additionally, the company's broader maternal and child health portfolio encompasses:
